First, let's talk about the educational necessities for being a good librarian. A graduation degree from a high school is a must. You can also get your GED. Once, you decide on the library science that you want to take up, you have to apply to a college for the degree. There are some colleges that provide classes on library science and pursuing such courses can help you to prepare for the Master's program after completing the graduation.

Attending college to get the degree is very important. The degree can be on any subject. There is no need of such specialization to become a librarian. Whatever you study will prove to be advantageous to your library career in future. You can also take up a good course in management to become a successful chief librarian. After all, librarians are the library manager and a management course can definitely prove to be beneficial.



When your graduation degree is over, you have to select a graduate school that is recognized by the American Library Association for your Master's degree. While pursuing the Master's you can work at a local library and gain some practical knowledge and information.  Taking up a job of a volunteer in a library can also prove to be advantageous as you will learn a lot. If no proper openings are available, try to volunteer.

After completing your Master's, you have to search for serious employment as a librarian. If you have volunteered or worked at a local library, it can help to start on your library career. If you don't want to begin there, then you have to lookout for the employment agencies or search online job portals. Visit the libraries in the nearby areas and find out whether there are any available positions or not.

Your search for jobs should not be limited to the conventional libraries. Spread your reach and find out options in the libraries of high schools and colleges or the medical, media or newspaper libraries. There are also government-run libraries where you can lookout for an opening as chief librarian.

Average salary of a librarian is around $51,000 and hence it is definitely a worthy job. Apart from being a librarian, there are different areas where you can find employment. You can work as a researcher, curator, cataloger or archivist too. Thus, there are many tasks to do while being a librarian.
