Our School

Bertschi School, founded in 1975, is a Washington State approved elementary school. We are an credited member of the Pacific Northwest Association of Independent Schools (NWAIS) and the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS). The school serves children from pre-kindergarten through grade five.

Position General Description

This position is open for a dynamic librarian to oversee and manage the school’s fully automated and networked library of over 10,000 books. We seek the balance of an intellectually and creative program that is developmentally appropriate. Experience with differentiated instruction preferred, a love of working closely with children, and a broad knowledge of children’s literature and culturally responsive teaching is essential.


Degree in education and school library media

Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science preferred

A minimum of four years of experience in an elementary library setting preferred

Proficiency with library technology skills and knowledge of library automation software

In-depth knowledge of digital and online information resources, including a familiarity with digital media rights and student use in research

Experience or knowledge teaching the research process to students ages 6-12

Deep love and knowledge of children’s literature

Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Strong organizational, management, and goal-setting skills

Experience in curriculum development, collaborative planning and team teaching

Desire and ability to work with children ages 4-12


Teach library procedures, organization, and research as appropriate to students, grade level curriculum, projects and staff needs

Be on the cutting edge of library technology and the pedagogy of teaching library information sciences to elementary age children

Instruct students and staff in the use of library resources including the online catalog, print materials, digital resources, and technology tools

Keeps information literacy skills program relating to the needs of students and aligned with the school’s curriculum updated

Collaborate with all classroom, resource and learning specialist teachers and content specialists to leverage and integrate library and media resources

Collaborate with teachers for authentic research work and literature appreciation activities that support classroom content

Maintain current knowledge of children’s fiction and non-fiction

Assist students with reading selection through an active, working knowledge of books and authors in the collection

Purchase, catalog and maintain book collection

Manage a team of parent volunteers for library support

Promote the library as a resource center with community activities including annual book swap, Community Book Experience, and Battle of the Books

Understand and support the role and work of the Diversity Committee, ensuring that the library collection adequately reflects the diversity of the school and larger community

Administrative Responsibilities

Attends community meetings, curriculum meetings, and in-service days. Actively participates in faculty work aligned to the strategic plan

Edits student evaluations, twice a year according to the school calendar

Participates in Spring Art Showcase, Grandparents/Special Friends Day, Back to School Night and Admissions Open House and other stewardship opportunities

Manages own library budget and orders school supplies

Engages actively in whole school curriculum work and personal development as a professional
