Eastern Michigan University is seeking a University Librarian to serve as chief administrator for the Library. The selected candidate will advance student and faculty learning through visionary leadership in planning, implementing, managing, and evaluating library services, collections, systems, facilities, and budgets.
EMU is a comprehensive university enrolling approximately 21,000 students at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The Bruce T. Halle Library is a hub for student and faculty support services. The Library faculty and staff seek a leader with honesty and integrity to provide intellectual and academic leadership and foster a culture of diversity and inclusion.
Principle Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide administrative departmental leadership in the delivery of a full program of professional services, development and new services, and the revision of existing services.
Evaluate the effectiveness of the Library's services and the fiscal resources required to ensure optimal services through consultation with the University officers, deans, department head, faculty and students.
Serve as head of the Library in all contractual matters (e.g., faculty and lecturer hiring and evaluation for reappointment and promotion, and faculty tenure evaluations) with recommendations forwarded to the Provost.
Approve the selection of faculty, administrative, professional/technical and clerical support staff in the University Library.
In consultation with faculty, staff, and users, evaluate, plan, develop and implement Library policies and procedures, including but not limited to Library collection and services.
Advise the Provost on matters relating to the planning, development, and implementation of Library services.
Prepare and monitor departmental budgets for professional services, acquisitions, equipment and SS&M and serve as final approval authority in budget development and control of the Library operating budget.
Oversee the development and control of the Library operating budget.
Serve as a representative of the Library in the local community, regionally within the state and nationally.
Represent the Department within the Library and the University, including participation as a member of the Deans' Advisory Council (DAC).
Contribute to and participate in the professional performance, scholarly/creative activity and service activities of the department.
Perform other related duties as required.
Successful candidates must have
a Master's degree in Library and Information Sciences (ALA accredited or equivalent);
at least seven years of experience in the library/information technology field including three years as Assistant Director/Dean or in an equivalent library leadership role;
knowledge of the professional responsibilities of library faculty and staff;
experience in library/information services administration, program design/development, and budgeting;
proven ability to foster collaboration in the Library and across the University;
strong communication skills;
experience recruiting, developing, and evaluating library faculty and staff.
In addition, preference will be given to individuals who possess
credentials for appointment to rank of full professor and a strong record of scholarly and professional achievements;
experience working in collective bargaining and/or shared governance environments;
experience writing and administering grants;
record of involvement with community and professional organizations;
earned doctorate and/or additional graduate degree.
