Nature of Work

This is professional library work which involves the adult, children, or extension services (subject departments and technical processes) of the library. Work includes allocating funds, formulating policies, solving administrative problems, and recommending the hiring and firing of subordinate staff.

Education and Experience

(The knowledge, skills, abilities, and/or personal characteristics in this section may be acquired through, but are not limited to, the following combination of education and experience.) Four years of experience in professional library work, two years of which must have been in a supervisory capacity in the field of specialization. Graduation from a recognized college or university with a Master’s Degree in Library Science from an accredited (ALA) school of Library Science.

Special Qualifications:

Must register for Nebraska Public Librarian Certification through the Nebraska Library Commission within 30 days of the hiring date. Must complete necessary training requirements to keep certification current while employed by the Omaha Public Library.

Must be able to transport oneself or coordinate transportation to various work sites.

Salary Range$66,339.26 to $80,434.38 Annual


Forty-hour work week; twelve days of paid vacation per year for the first five years; five days of management leave per year if employed on the first day of the payroll year; sick leave and twelve paid holidays. Examination Information

The examination will consist of a structured interview which will be scheduled at a later date. The structured interview is designed to assess job-related knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position. The final eligibility list will be assembled from those candidates achieving a passing score of 60% on the structured interview (100% weight).

Veteran's Points

To claim five (5) points for Veteran’s preference, you must submit proof of service (such as a DD-214) that includes date of induction, date of honorable separation, and Social Security number. (You must have completed more than 180 consecutive days of active duty.) To receive an additional five (5) points credit for disability, you must submit proof of eligibility from Veterans Administration dated within the last 12 months. This information must be submitted by 6/11/18.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilitites

Knowledge of professional library principles, methods, practices and materials as they relate to the field of specialization.

Knowledge of library reference and research materials.

Knowledge of reader interest levels, books and authors.

Knowledge of effective management practices and procedures.

Knowledge of acquisition procedures and the budget process.

Knowledge of turn-key automation system.

Ability to analyze the needs of the community and to plan, develop and conduct appropriate programs for targeted groups.

Ability to analyze professional and administrative problems, make recommendations and take appropriate action.

Ability to interpret library policies and objectives.

Ability to operate a computer keyboard and view a computer screen to access library catalog files and other data bases.

Ability to view printed text on book bindings to retrieve library materials.

Ability to direct and evaluate the work of professional, para-professional and clerical employees.

Ability to maintain accurate records of expenses.

Ability to stimulate the interest of readers in library resources.

Ability to communicate verbally in order to answer reference questions and provide reading guidance.

Ability to understand oral or written instructions.

Ability to adhere to safety policies, procedures and guidelines.

Ability to reach, bend, stoop, squat, walk, sit, push and pull 0 to 25% of the time.

Ability to move objects weighing up to 20 pounds 0 to 33% of the time and weighing up to 10 pounds 67 to 100% of the time.

Essential Functions:

Directs the adult, children or extension services within the library system by formulating library policies and procedures, establishing goals and objectives and participating in problem solving and long range planning.

Oversees the administration of the automated catalog and circulation system to include monitoring and negotiating system contracts, loading updates to the software, and addressing system malfunctions.

Approves and coordinates the selection and purchase of materials for the library system for effective use of library funds.

Oversees the cataloging and bindery functions of the library.

Recommends the hiring and firing of library personnel and directs the evaluates the work of subordinate professional, para-professional and clerical personnel engaged in providing library services.

Participates in the allocation and administration of the library materials budget by analyzing fiscal reports and evaluating library needs.

Administers contract compliance for cleaning services and lawn care and snow removal operations.

Attends conferences and meetings to stimulate interest in the use of the library and to acquire additional professional knowledge; attends book selection and managers’ meetings.

Performs the duties of subordinate library staff when necessary.

Performs other related duties as assigned or as the situation dictates within the scope of this classification.

Candidates must provide proof of U.S. citizenship or proof of permanent residence or authorization to work. The City of Omaha reserves the right to conduct criminal history, driving record, reference and credit checks and a background investigation on applicants for employment. Successfully passing a criminal background review, reference check, and if applicable, a credit check, is required as a condition of employment. If applicable, the City will require that you successfully pass a review of the driver's license, driving abstract, a pre-employment drug test, a hearing test and a back screening examination as a condition of employment.
