Job Summary
The Getty Research Institute (GRI) Research Library seeks a creative, forward-looking, collaborative, and service-oriented Electronic and Digital Resources Librarian. The position reports to the Head of Library Technical Services and has a leading role in the workflows that establish and maintain discovery of and access to the library’s electronic resources licensed locally and consortially through the Statewide California Electronic Library Consortium (SCELC). The position also has a leading role in providing cataloging and bibliographic metadata related to internal and external electronic resources and locally digitized resources. The position has a supporting role in ensuring the integrated discovery and access across this same set of resources. In addition, the position serves as the Library’s primary contact with SCELC, vendors, and publishers, and library personnel regarding discovery and access issues associated with the Library’s licensed electronic resources. As a key member of a cross-unit electronic resources management team, the position coordinates with various Library units for managing electronic resources in such functions as acquisitions, cataloging, collection development, and user services. The position is expected to play an active role in the Library’s e-resource related training, projects, and initiatives.
Major Job Responsibilities
Work collaboratively with other units to initiate and manage trials, order resources, manage renewals, track usage, and resolve access issues for all electronic resources. Manages updates to electronic resources tools, such as Primo Central Index, and provider interfaces to reflect local needs.
Catalog electronic resources in OCLC or activate Alma Community Zone records for remote-access materials (e.g., web sites, databases, e-journals. e-books) and direct-access materials (e.g., DVDs, CD-ROMs)
Maintain bibliographic records for electronic and locally digitized resources, correcting errors in OCLC and Alma records, and reporting Alma Community Zone record errors. Enhance &/or upgrade minimal-level records for materials in preparation for local digitization.
Work with the
GRI Information Systems & Institutional Metadata on issues involving bibliographic metadata, including receiving and processing
bibliographic records included in the weekly local digitization update.
Manages communications with Library users and staff regarding trials, newly acquired resources, platform changes, service disruptions, and cancellations.
Serve as a liaison to SCELC.
Getty Research Portal: Work with the content specialist to provide information &/or guidance regarding bibliographic metadata.
Getty Virtual Library: Work with Getty publications to provide updated MARC record files for publications they provide freely on the web.
May provide support to Research Services as needed, such as assisting or training others in the effective use of electronic resources, and may include reference desk hours.
Qualifications
MLIS from an ALA-accredited library school; graduate degree in Art History or a related discipline preferred.
Minimum 2-3 years professional experience
May require special subject, language, or technical expertise
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Reading knowledge of at least 2 foreign languages
Advanced-level facility with systems required to perform work duties, including OCLC Connexion, MarcEdit, integrated library systems (Alma preferred), and electronic resource management systems. These may also include systems designed for collection management, digital materials management and transformation, digital repository management, digital asset management, data management, data set management, data integration, communications, resource discovery, and social media.
Solid understanding of bibliographic metadata structure and principles and the principles of authority control, particularly selecting and applying controlled vocabularies and ontologies.
Working knowledge of industry standards related to serials and e-resources.
Ability to meet deadlines, apply policies and procedures consistently, conduct research, and present recommendations
Knowledge of emerging trends, technologies, and best practices related to electronic resource management, bibliographic metadata, and the U.S. and foreign scholarly publishing industry, and vendor services.
Specialized knowledge of the art book and/or electronic resource trade preferred.
Familiarity with copyright, fair use, and other intellectual property issues as they pertain to e-resources and license agreements
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, interpersonal skills, and attention to detail.
Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a small team
May require supervisory or project management skills
Experience with book digitization projects preferred.
Experience with fund management and budget processes preferred.
Knowledge of Python desirable.
