The intern will work with the Brookings Archives to perform basic preservation activities relating to the paper collection, and to assist with planning for preservation of born-digital documents. This unpaid internship provides a pre-professional learning experience that offers meaningful, practical work experience related to the student’s field of study or career interest. It will provide an opportunity for career exploration and development as well as a chance to learn new skills. ResponsibilitiesLearning Objectives The Archivist intern will become familiar with the basic principles of maintaining a public policy research archives. The intern will assist the Brookings Archivist with accession, cataloging, reference services, and outreach. Specific projects will include updating a finding aid to the collection, rehousing material for preservation, working with OCLC ContentDM content management system, and exploring options for the preservation of born digital documents. Interns will have the opportunity to attend internal meetings, local think tank events, professional development workshops, and public Brookings events as well as participate on Brookings sports teams and network with other interns throughout the Institution. QualificationsEducation/Knowledge/Skills Graduate or undergraduate students (who have completed their sophomore year) working towards a degree in a relevant field are eligible to apply. Recent college graduates are also eligible to apply. Interest in American history or public policy research, preferred. Applicants should have strong attention to detail, basic computer skills, ability to follow oral and written directions, good concentration and follow-through. Must have ability to lift 5 to 20 pounds, and ability to tolerate dust. Additional Information: Successful completion of a background investigation is required for interning at Brookings.
