Collection Development & Management Program

The University of California San Diego Library seeks applications from highly motivated, innovative, collaborative, and service-oriented professionals to join the Library as our Social Sciences Collections Strategist/Political Science Librarian (Assistant, Associate or Full Librarian). This position reports to the Assistant Director of the Library's Collection Development & Management Program. The Social Sciences Division awards 37% of all undergraduate degrees at UC San Diego, with 227 faculty, 670+ graduate students, and 7,000+ undergraduate majors. There are ten academic departments in the division, 4 interdisciplinary degree programs, and 23 Research Centers. Graduate programs in Cognitive Science, Communication, Economics, Psychology, Behavioral Neuroscience, Cognitive Psychology, and Political Science are highly ranked nationally or internationally.

Program Description

The Collection Development & Management Program (CDM) collaboratively supports the UC San Diego Library's mission of providing, managing, and preserving information resources in a variety of formats to meet the diverse and evolving teaching, learning, and research needs of our users. The program is essential to the academic success and scholarly productivity of students, faculty and researchers. The program plays a critical role in both supporting and transforming the cycle of scholarly communications through ongoing stewardship of the products of research, identifying strategies and innovative approaches to collecting and sharing digital scholarship, and actively participating in shared collection and Open Access initiatives.

Responsibilities of the Position

Social Sciences Collection Strategist

Key responsibilities include:

Provides leadership and guidance in transforming the nature of collection development for the social sciences to include research data, born digital resources, and strategies that increase openness and access.

Oversees budget allocations and expenditures, including new continuation requests, for social sciences funds.

Guides, supports, shares information with, and provides collections related direction to Subject Librarians in the social sciences.

Collaborates with the Library's Collection Strategy Team to develop, review, and assess innovative projects that improve sustainability of the Library's collection investments. Contribute to decision-making involving renewals, new title selections, and cancellations on local and UC-wide licensed resources.

Representing subjects in the social sciences, actively participates in the Library's Scholarly Communication initiatives to identify and assess open access investment options.

Responsible for the management planning for the physical collections in the social sciences. Serves as a member of the Library's Collection Management Working Group to coordinate weeding and space reduction projects for existing analog collections. Provides input and recommendations in managing physical collections in context of UC Shared Print Initiatives and other regional and national consortia.

Represents the Library on relevant UC-wide Common Knowledge Groups. Collaborates on the selection, renewal, and assessment of shared licensed resources. In some cases, is responsible for negotiating licensing terms and agreements for resources with publishers and other UC Libraries.

Directly supervises the Government Information Librarian. Closely collaborates with Data Services and GIS Librarians on collections issues.

Subject Librarian for Political Science

Serves as the primary contact and information resource on library services, resources, and policies.

Provides research consultation, reference, and instruction services to support undergraduate, graduate, and faculty research, teaching and learning endeavors. Serves as a resource for information on data services, scholarly communication, and digital scholarship.

Develops collections to support the teaching, learning, and research needs of the students and faculty.

Collaborates with other subject librarians in the Social Sciences to support interdisciplinary undergraduate, graduate and faculty researchers in finding, analyzing and managing data, and promoting library data services.

Required Qualifications

Professional degree from a library school or other appropriate degree or equivalent experience in one or more fields relevant to library services.

Three or more years of professional library experience in collection development and management, demonstrating innovative accomplishments and solid knowledge of the scholarly communications life cycle in the social sciences.

Familiarity with electronic and scholarly resources and reference tools in the social sciences.

Ability to provide advanced research assistance and participate in course-integrated instruction in the social sciences.

Excellent analytical, interpersonal, communication, time management, organizational and problem-solving skills.

Ability to plan, document, and complete projects.

Ability to work independently as well as within a team environment and with faculty, students, staff and colleagues from diverse backgrounds.

Strong commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in higher education.

Preferred Qualifications

Undergraduate and/or graduate degree in Political Science or another social sciences discipline.

Experience developing and managing collections within a library consortium.

Experience coordinating the work of staff or librarians.

Knowledge of or experience working with GIS and/or Data Services collections as related to the Social Sciences.

Salary: Salary and level of appointment in the Librarian series commensurate with qualifications and experience and based on the University of California pay scales.
