Job Description:

Do you have the desire and curiosity to creatively move cataloging to the next level? The Arthur Lakes Library of Colorado School of Mines invites applications for the position of Metadata Initiatives Librarian. To give you a brief overview of this opportunity, it is not just a standard cataloging job, but is open to working with your expertise and allowing you to explore and grow into new areas of interest.


The successful candidate will help the Mines Library enhance discovery and use of our rich collections and services. Duties will include: Develop and maintain local policies for, and participate in the creation of, original and complex copy-cataloging in multiple formats; evaluate and make recommendations concerning emerging metadata standards; oversee catalog maintenance activities, including metadata loads, record source management, and database quality control issues as they relate to bibliographic and item-level access to library resources; participate, plan, organize, and evaluate the library management system workflows (particularly as they relate to cataloging) to maximize efficiency and responsiveness to the needs of the other library departments and of library users; coordinate and manage OCLC services and authority control; and supervise and train students and staff member(s) working on cataloging and metadata quality control projects, copy cataloging, and database maintenance activities. S/he will remain informed about emerging issues, standards, and technologies regarding the library profession. S/he will serve on committees for the Library, the University, and other organizations, contribute to the profession, and engage in scholarship.

Minimum Qualifications:

Master’s degree in library science from an ALA accredited school (granted by start date) and experience cataloging or managing metadata

Familiarity with current and emerging issues, trends, workflows, and best practices in metadata

Knowledge of bibliographic metadata standards, including RDA, MARC, LCC, LCSH, and experience creating and working with authority data

Flexibility and creativity in adapting to rapidly changing metadata management circumstances

Ability to work effectively in both an independent and collaborative and complex environment

Demonstrated analytical skills, including complex problems solving

Effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills

Commitment to user-centric librarianship, scholarship, and service

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience working with a next generation library management system and discovery layer (i.e., Alma/Primo)

Experience with analyzing and remediating existing metadata to meet current standards

Experience in designing and implementing batch processes for working with bibliographic records

Experience working with non-bibliographic library metadata schema such as Dublin Core, VRA Core, METS or MODS

Knowledge of linked data, ontologies, and taxonomies

Experience in project planning, workflow development, and/or writing documentation

Department Description: The Arthur Lakes Library supports the information and educational needs of Mines, primarily in science and engineering, and provides technical information to the regional community. The Library is staffed by 10 faculty librarians and 11 paraprofessionals. More information can be found at
