Job Description
The Library Assistant is responsible for assisting with the shelving, straightening, shifting and shelf-reading of the Library’s collections that are held in the Look Reading Room. Learns to use reports to remove newly acquired monographs from the Look Reading Room to be transferred to the stacks.
Required Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or GED, or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
One year of related experience in customer service or general office/clerical work.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.
Basic keyboarding skills.
Knowledge of email, word processing, and spreadsheets applications. Good interpersonal skills.
Excellent communication and customer service skills
Other Requirements or Other Factors:
Ability to move medium weight boxes, books, heavy book truck, or similar items.
Ability to handle material which can contain dust or microscopic mold spores.
Ability to work in narrow aisles and involving bending, reaching, stretching, stooping, and lifting activities as well as standing for extended period of time.
Reliable attendance.
Preferred Education and Experience:
Previous library, shelving, or stacking experience.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of Library of Congress Call numbers.
Preferred Other Factors:
Must be able to work Monday – Friday 7:45 am – 4:45 pm;
One hour lunch break.
Must be able to adjust schedule on an occasional basis to help cover during extended hours or in the event of an emergency.
Responsibilities:
Will be trained to: Assists with shelving, straightening, shifting, and shelf-reading all newly acquired monographs, Bestsellers, Weinbaum, Current Periodicals, and Reference Collection that are held in the Look Reading Room. Ensures that all materials are available in a timely manner. Learns to use voyagermis reports to remove newly acquired monographs from the Look Reading Room to be transferred to the stacks. Interacts daily with a diverse population of library users.
Will be trained to: Picks up library material on the first and second floors of Evans and transports materials to the Intermediate Shelving in Evans. Assists with shelving, straightening, shifting, and shelf-reading materials in the main library’s collection, especially during peak load periods.
Will be trained to: Opens the Annex 3rd Floor door daily. Learns how to compile unit statistics. May assist the Library Manager in day-to-day training of new student employees. Reports any issues back to the Library Manager. Performs other duties as assigned.
