Job SummarynThe Head of Research Services in the Research Library of the Getty Research Institute leads and manages a department comprised of the various teams with responsibility for the following functions: Reference, Circulation, Interlibrary Loan, and the Special Collections Reading Room. Mentors, trains, and advises staff. Analyzes and solves problems creatively and collegially. The candidate will be a top level technical contributor to one or more highly specialized functions of reference and research services, providing research services, tours, workshops, etc. in area of expertise, and may conduct research, present, and publish in area(s) of expertise.nMajor Job Responsibilitiesnn Works closely with the section managers to guide the staff and activities of the entire department, seeking synergies, developing and overseeing policies and procedures, ensuring quality service, analyzing workflows to improve efficiencies, and providing guidance on best practicesn May provide specialized collection overviews, tours, workshops, and high level assistance to outside collaborators and instructors teaching within the collectionsn May lead and/or participate in working groups and committees related to activities within area(s) of expertisen May develop, monitor, communicate, interpret and execute project plans and budget for projects internally and externallyn Collaborates with colleagues to devise and/or revise policies and procedures for servicesn Applies creative solutions while recommending, developing, or improving practices and procedures which use current and emerging technologiesn Maintains and shares expert knowledge of professional activities and trends; mentors staffn Keeps current on technological advances and incorporates knowledge into primary activities and initiativesn May advise and participate as the Research Library representative in wider GRI or Trust-level working groups and/or research projectsn Represents the GRI externally in field of expertise as appropriaten May publish, present, and/or participate in research projects and/or exhibitions related to area of expertisen Participates in library and GRI management teamnn nQualificationsn n Bacheloru2019s degree in Art History or related discipline; MLIS, graduate work or equivalent research experience in Art History; advanced degree in Art History strongly preferred n Minimum 7 years of experience working in an advanced research library or academic Library in reference services, with at least 5 years experience working with collection materials n 3-5 years related supervisory experience n Project Management skills nnKnowledge, Skills and Abilitiesnn Knowledge of art history, reference techniques, research strategies, current practicesn Reading knowledge of 2 foreign languages; speaking ability in at least one preferred; familiarity with other languagesn Excellent verbal, written, interpersonal and organizational skills to work effectively with a wide range of staff and patrons onsite and virtually.n Ability to be highly flexible, service-oriented, and to lead as well as to collaborate and work collegially in teamsn Expert project management skillsn High level of knowledge and understanding of library standards, best-practices, library applications, computer systems, online databases, digital imaging technology, user access, and image delivery technologyn Advanced knowledge of history, theory, and professional practices associated with materials found in art research libraries and special collections, including rare books, manuscripts, and graphic materialsn
