General Description of Duties This is responsible public contact and clerical work in the Leon County Public Library system.ESSENTIAL DUTIESAssists customers.Work involves, but is not limited to, providing patrons with courteous and prompt customer service; working at an information desk greeting customers, directing patrons, and monitoring the security entrance; answering the telephone at the switchboard, making public address announcements; and issuing library and voter registration cards.Handles public Internet Access.Monitors internet sign-in and time limits.Refills paper and handles minor hardware problems.Makes referrals to librarians for information inquiries.Assists new users with basic internet skills.Maintains waiting list for internet users.Performs clerical tasks while on duty at Internet such as clipping newspaper articles, sorting materials for filing, and folding brochures.Handles materials.Work involves checking in library materials from library patrons; checking out library materials to library patrons; routing in and out library materials; and handling reserves and interlibrary loan materials and notices.Performs at least one of the following tasks: handles returned materials; handles send item materials; monitors and trains volunteers; handles damaged materials; maintains departmental supplies and inventory records; handles returned mail; mails out library cards; handles improperly returned materials from other agencies; and handles voter registration cards and records.Performs other assignments such as, but not limited to, participating in staff training programs; assisting customers with phone renewals and circulation problems; handling fines and fees; accepting cash and checks for payment of fines; preparing bank deposits; balancing cash drawers; and handling payments of lost and damaged materials. OTHER IMPORTANT OR MARGINAL DUTIESNone.DIFFICULTYEmployees in positions assigned to this class are responsible for daily customer service provisions and handling library materials which are both covered by a specific written set of procedures.Work tasks performed need to be checked for accuracy and compliance with procedures.Judgment may include applying and enforcing library and County policies; resolving customer complaints to customer=s satisfaction while using appropriate policies and procedures.RESPONSIBILITY:Supervision ReceivedWork is performed with independence once employee becomes knowledgeable of established procedures.Duties require judgment in determining which procedure to apply.Supervision of OthersEmployee assigned to this class may train lower level staff on how to perform tasks.INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL CUSTOMER CONTACTEmployee has contact with staff and customers for the purpose of exchanging, receiving, and obtaining information.EQUIPMENT AND TOOLS USEDTools and equipment include, but is not limited to, using a personal computer, library material, word processing and database software, typewriter, and calculator.WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDSMost work is performed indoors while standing or sitting.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIESKnowledge of the DRA circulation system, including all aspects of borrower services, circulation services and bibliographic services.Knowledge of library policies and procedures.Knowledge of team work concepts and diversity awareness.Skill in communicating, courteously, efficiently, and effectively over the phone and in person with a diverse population.Skill in handling task with attention to detail.Skill in simple mathematics and accounting.Ability to communicate orally and in writing.Ability to file in alpha-numeric sequence.Ability to handle simultaneous requests for service.Ability to work well with the public.Ability to lift or carry up to 20 pounds.Ability to push or pull up to 75 pounds.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSRequires a high school diploma or an equivalent or six months of clerical or related work experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.Necessary Special Requirements:Must be able to push heavy bins and carts of books.See Job Description Questionnaire (JDQ) for exact amounts that may depend upon the position.Must be able to bend and lift books and materials repeatedly throughout work shift.Must be able to work days, evenings, and weekends.FLSA STATUS: Position is Non-exempt.Analysis: This is primarily first level public contract work assisting library patrons with checking out books and using library computers and facilities.Leon County pays employees a living wage of $12.00 per hour as a minimum hourly rate.
