Furlong Baldwin Library which houses over 7 million documents and books dating from pre-colonization to the present day. In addition, the library collection includes a vast photography collection and a range of audio and digital collections. The Library Director will articulate a clear vision for this vital component of the institution, guide daily functions and shape the larger institutional role of the library.
The ideal candidate for this position is an experienced team player who has overseen diverse collections, created public programming to promote library holdings and who enjoys interfacing with the public, scholars, donors and the Board of Trustees. The Library Director will be a member of MdHS’s Senior Staff and will interact with all departments to create relevant innovative programming and exhibitions. They will be flexible, enthusiastic, and enjoy tackling a diverse range of responsibilities. The ideal candidate will have experience in building collections as well as deaccessioning collections to bring refinement and focus to the library’s holdings.
This position reports to the Vice President of Collections and Interpretation and will oversee a department composed of 4 staff members.
Builds and maintains relationships locally and nationally to further the institution's leadership role
With the Vice President of Collections and Interpretation and the Registrar, formulates the Library’s acquisitions strategy and makes modifications when warranted
Works with internal and external stakeholders in proactively researching and recommending acquisitions in alignment with the collections policy
Coordinates and presides over, with the Chair of the Library Committee, quarterly Library Committee meetings. Recruits and recommends potential Library Committee members
Attends quarterly Board of Trustee meetings and reports on Library activities
Works closely with Information Technology Manager and other experts to strategically advance the Library through the ongoing adoption of current digital practices in providing open access, collaboration and preservation
Oversees security in the Library
Prioritize conservation needs in the library collections and coordinates conservation projects with the Vice President of Collections and Interpretation and Registrar
With the assistance of the Registrar, oversee the conditions and organization of library storage areas
With the Director of Public Relations, guide the content of social media and blog posts that relate to the Library
Oversee the content of the Library blog
Work with the Education staff to develop digital and on-site programs that utilize library collections
Collaborates closely with the Advancement Department to steward gifts, including grants, made in support of the Library
Builds consensus and fosters synergies between Library and Museum staff in the development of programming and other institutional initiatives
Conducts and leads collection-related research and assessment as necessary in support of the resource allocation, prioritization and collection policy development
Cultivates Library’s relationship with the Lord Baltimore Fellows
Works with the Advancement team to foster relationships with other existing or potential Library donors in support of stewardship activities
Curates one to two small exhibitions a year in a dedicated library gallery
Publishes and presents at professional conferences
Hires, mentors, supervises and supports the development of all Library staff
Recommends new program initiatives to fulfill the Library’s goals and works with the staff responsible for seeing them through to completion
Develops and oversees the Library’s annual budget and serves as an active participant in institutional long-term financial planning
Oversees the development of policies and procedures for physical and electronic collection access, open access, preservation and conservation and oversees adherence
With the Vice President of Collections and Interpretation and the assistance of the Library staff and Registrar, provides strategic oversight for the development of future exhibitions and/or loan of Library materials
Works closely with the Marketing Department and Exhibitions Planning team to ensure the Library’s programs, services and exhibition are promoted as effectively as possible
Collaborates closely with the Advancement Department, including its Manager of Institutional Giving, to initiate, complete, submit, and provide respective required reporting for various grant funding applications
Manages major projects for the Library, such as space planning, acquisition of equipment, etc.
Develops strategies to increase the use and promote the relevance of the Library’s collections to various constituents
Attends cultivation events and other donor events which are typically in the evening and on weekends
Ensures that the Library maintains the highest level of legal, ethical and safety standards
Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited program. Graduate level coursework in American History is also desirable
Minimum of 5 to 7 years professional experience with increasing responsibility for managing a library or a special collections department
Demonstrated experience in strategic planning
Demonstrated digital literacy at the end-user, administrative and strategic perspective
Demonstrated experience in applying efficient processing techniques in accessing, appraising, arranging, describing, and preserving archival collections of varying size and complexity
Experience supervising staff, interns, and volunteers, including providing feedback and evaluating outcomes
Experience and sensitivity when working with culturally diverse populations.
Demonstrated experience applying archival standards and vocabularies, including EAD, DACS, and LCSH
Knowledge of XML and familiarity with EOS and PastPerfect collections management systems
Knowledge of current issues and trends regarding digital archives, digitization, and digital scholarship
Understanding and ability to stay abreast of privacy, confidentiality, copyright, and use policies associated with archives and special collection materials
Excellent oral and written communication skills, organizational skills, and time management skills
Evidence of professional engagement at local, state, or national levels.
Experience delivering engaging programming using library collections
Experience with library preservation/conservation techniques and digitization, digital preservation practices and standards
Familiarity with techniques used to organize and mount exhibitions
Excellent written and verbal communication skills and meticulous attention to detail
Knowledge of and interest in U.S. history; knowledge of Maryland history, a plus
Possess a passion for history, art, and education
Familiarity with Apple and PC
Strong technology skills, including knowledge of Prezi, video conferencing software, and Adobe Suite, a plus
Self-starter willing to learn new technology including social media, websites, graphic design, video editing, and more
Experience interfacing with the public
Strong public speaking skills
Ability to lift, shift, and shelve boxes weighing up to 25 lbs.
This is a full-time position based at the organization’s offices in the Mount Vernon neighborhood of Baltimore.
