Exhibits strong independent judgment to assist library patrons by providing information

and reader and viewer advisory services. The primary audience served is adults.

Minimum Qualifications: (education, experience, and certifications)

 MLS from an ALA accredited library school

 Strong public service focus

 Demonstrated commitment to the pursuit of equity, diversity, and inclusion

Minimum Competencies: (knowledge, skills, and abilities)

 Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

 Broad cultural competency knowledge and skills, and ability to work effectively

with a culturally diverse workforce and community

 Knowledge of reference resources

 Knowledge of popular fiction, movies, and music

 Skill in use of computers and electronic resources

 Knowledge of reference and reader and viewer advisory skills

 Ability to provide clear verbal and written communication, to provide

interpretation and explanation of information sources, and to provide instruction

in research technique and use of library resources

 Ability to resolve conflict and calmly de-escalate situations

 Ability to collaborate with staff throughout the library

 Ability to anticipate and creatively solve problems with a flexible mindset

 Ability to work independently and oversee multiple initiatives while meeting


 Organizational skills with attention to detail

Preferred Qualifications:

 2-3 years of experience in a public library

 Experience leading book discussions

 Experience teaching technology classes

Essential Job Functions:

 Provide information, reference, and reader and viewer advisory services to

patrons in person, by telephone, and through email and chat

 Help patrons to identify, locate, and retrieve materials appropriate to their

interests or information needs

 Explain, demonstrate, and assist customers in the use of electronic and print


 Demonstrate, assist, and instruct patrons in the use of information technologies

and library equipment, such as the catalog, online databases, web resources,

digital collections, photocopiers, computers, and mobile devices

 Maintain current knowledge of library and other relevant industries

 Maintain awareness of emerging technologies and new sources of information

 Continue to develop a broad knowledge of adult literature, movies, and music

by reading, viewing, and listening to a wide range of materials

 Design lists of public information, books, and other library materials

 Demonstrate ease and comfort with emerging technologies and participate in

training as needed

 Regular attendance and punctuality

Other Responsibilities may include:

 Attending professional meetings and trainings

 Leading book discussions

 Teaching technology classes

Physical/Mental Demands and Environmental Conditions:

 Work includes prolonged sitting, standing, stooping, bending, lifting/moving

materials, as well as frequent computer use. Manual dexterity, clear speech,

hearing acuity, and correctable vision are also required.

 Ability to navigate throughout the building

 Noise level is generally moderate

 Employee must park in designated areas.

 Reasonable accommodations to these requirements will be made as needed.

 Scheduling may require availability during any library operating hours, including

days, evenings, and weekends. Although a weekly schedule is established, the

needs of the library may require scheduling changes and flexibility.

Direct reports may include:


Required schedule: Includes evening hours 2-3 evenings per week, one Saturday per month from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, and one Sunday per month from noon to 6:00 pm. Average of 13 hours per week.
