Job Description:

Job Summary

The Law Librarian - Reference is responsible for

providing reference, research and bibliographical

instruction to all qualified patrons. Participates in

teaching legal research to students through the

Professional Skills program, through assistance at the

reference desk, and in research courses taught by the

Librarians, such as California Legal Research. Incumbent

must assure that the Company philosophy (quality

services to clients; development, growth, involvement,

and environment which is conducive to innovation,

positive thinking and expansion) is considered in

carrying out the duties and responsibilities of this


Key Job Elements

Provides reference service to faculty, students,

staff and attorneys and other qualified patrons.

This includes in-depth research for faculty through

the Library’s faculty liaison program.

Performs database searching, including LEXIS,

WESTLAW, BNA, Hein Online, CCH, BNA and other


Works with the Technical Services staff to insure

the cataloging and processing of library materials.

Assists in hiring and the supervision of temporary

employees and the Public Services/Administrative

Library Assistant.

Conducts Library tours for professional skills

students and prospective students.

Teaches research as part of the Professional Skills

Program as well as research courses taught

exclusively by librarians.

Coordinates and contributes to the Library’s website

and the intranet.

Assists in the preparation of FAQ series,

bibliographies and pathfinders.

Participates, as a member of the collection

development team, in Collection Development by

reviewing publishers’ catalogs, announcements,

flyers and bibliographies for recommendations for

Job Requirements



JD from an ABA-accredited (or foreign equivalent)

institution and a MLIS degree from an ALA-accredited

(or foreign equivalent) institution. Persons with a

JD who are currently accepted in an MLS degree

program at an ALA-accredited school are encouraged

to apply.

In-depth knowledge of legal sources and legal

research in electronic and print formats.

Strong customer service orientation.

Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Ability to work both independently and



Experience working in an academic law library.

Teaching Experience.

Demonstrated interest in or experience with law

practice technology.


Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Strong interpersonal skills with both peer and

subordinate personnel.

Superior organizational skills.


Ability to work effectively in groups.
