Responsible for facilitating the circulation of materials into, out of, and within the City libraries. Also, responsible for performing light manual tasks, customer service and clerical duties, as well as assist with shelving books and other materials.
Essential Job Functions
Check in/out library books and materials from book/video drops and inside drops.
Presort and temporarily shelve books/audio visual material.
Load and organize books/materials on carts to be shelved.
Work at Circulation desk providing assistance to patrons in person and over the phone.
Problem resolution in regards to patron records, pending fees, damaged materials according to the Library policies and procedures.
Load bins of books/materials into van and may deliver to other branch locations.
Move materials, furniture, shelving and equipment, as needed.
Ensure the continuous operation of the library circulation by operating personals, computers, and assessing and collecting fines.
May perform various pick-up, delivery jobs and errands in the library van.
Preferred Knowledge - Abilities & Skills
Some experience in a library environment
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
General knowledge of standard library filing systems
Basic skill with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook)
Skill to operate a computer keyboard to enter and retrieve information regarding books and materials
Skill in cash handling
Ability to understand and implement oral and written directions
Ability to drive a vehicle
Licenses & Certifications Valid Class C Texas driver's license
Physical Tasks & Working ConditionsREQUIRED WORK HOURS: The incumbent is required to work 19 hours per week, during specific hours. The incumbent must be available to work from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, and from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Saturdays. REQUIRED WORK LOCATIONS: The incumbent must be available to work at any of the four (4) Garland Library locations. The incumbent works in a typical library environment, but physical labor is required. Occasional outdoor work, and travel between city and library facilities may occur. Primary environment will be in a climate controlled, indoor atmosphere with some exposure to dust and occasional unpleasant conditions. Physical tasks will include lifting, squatting, bending, stooping, reaching overhead and carrying supplies, as needed to accomplish the tasks of the activity on a daily basis. Must be able to reach materials at 90\u201d height shelving or shelving at floor level, lift/carry up to 50 pounds regularly, and push/pull 200 pound wheeled book cart. Must also be able to utilize keyboard and peripherals, handheld mobile devices, and multi-function office phones.

Minimum Education & Work Experience Completion of the tenth grade At least 16 years of age Some customer service and/or retail experience Ability to file accurately by alphabet and numbers Or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.

The Recycling Center, Transfer Station, and Hinton Landfill will be closed Monday, Dec. 25 and Monday, Jan. 1. Environmental Waste Services' offices will be closed on Tuesday, Dec. 26. Phase 6 Cart Delivery Schedule Yellow Week: Jan. 23 – 26 Blue Week: Jan. 30 – Feb. 2 Once your blue cart is delivered you may keep your red bin. If you would like to recycle your red bin place it in the blue container or drop it off at Garland’s Recycling Center, located at 1426 Commerce St. Please call 972-205-3500 or email EWS@GarlandTX.gov if you have any questions. Don't Go Tarpless! The operator of any vehicle arriving at the Hinton Landfill, wood recycling center, or Garland's transfer station which does not have a suitable cover placed over the vehicle's load, shall pay a surcharge of $20 per City of Garland Code of Ordinances, Chapter 52, Article II, Sec. 52.47(F). The transfer station and landfill sell tarps for $10 each, but covering and securing your load from the beginning of your trip will be more effective at preventing litter.
