Special Collections Archivist (Full Time)
The **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***. is looking for a dynamic team player who will serve as a Special Collections Archivist in the **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***.’s H. Furlong Baldwin Library. The Special Collections Archivist will work with a staff of three and report to the Vice President of Collections and Interpretation. The Special Collections Archivist will function as an archivist, reference librarian, and cataloger while balancing patron services, technical services, managing volunteers, promoting the library through various methods of outreach, and providing institutional support. The Special Collections Archivist is responsible for processing, organizing, cataloging, preserving, and providing access to library materials and serving the public.
The duties of the Special Collections Archivist can be broken into five categories; Patron Services, Collection Maintenance, Outreach and Support, Technology, and Administrative.
Serve as point of contact for patrons entering the library at the Reference Desk. Responsible for orientation, policy instruction, security and handling of collections, research assistance, and equipment support
Answer questions via reference email and telephone
Fulfill photocopy and microfilm orders both in-person and remotely
Pull and locate manuscripts, photographs, maps, broadsides, books, pamphlets, oral histories, etc.
Promote the library through events, the library blog, creating mini-exhibits, and giving tours
Oversee and training interns and volunteers working with special collections
Correspond with scholars and publishers about copyright, permission to publish and citation inquiries
Assist the Special Collections Librarian with cataloging special collections items.
Process, rehouse, create finding aids, and assign collection numbers for photograph and manuscript collections
Conduct provenance research
Communicate with potential donors and maintaining strong relationships with current members
Provide institutional support by assisting the Education Department and Museum Department to facilitate programs and exhibits requiring library material, as well as working closely with the Imaging Services Department
Administrative tasks such as ordering supplies, managing vendor contracts, managing petty cash and processing credit card transactions, keeping statistics, and space planning
Assist with grant applications and ensuring fulfillment of awarded grants for library collections care, processing and conservation
Master’s degree in library science, archival studies or related field preferred
1-2 years working in a library or archive setting
Experience processing archival collections
Familiarity with born-digital archives issues
Commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion through archival practice
Willingness to work collaboratively with other library staff as well as other departments
Experience accessioning and/or processing born-digital archives
Excellent written and verbal communication skills and meticulous attention to detail
Knowledge of and interest in U.S. history; knowledge of Maryland history a plus
Possess a passion for history, art and education
Familiarity with Apple and PC
Strong technology skills, including knowledge of Prezi, video conferencing software and Adobe Suite a plus
Self-starter willing to learn new technology including social media, websites, graphic design, video editing and more
Experience interfacing with the public
Strong public speaking skills
Ability to lift and shelve boxes weighing up to 25 lbs.
