Full Time - Faculty
The Pace Academy Lower School seeks an experienced K-5 librarian for the 2018-19 academic year. The ideal candidate will have a proven record of innovation and collaboration, extensive teaching experience, and the desire and leadership capacity to create an environment in which student engagement and creative problem-solving thrive through the library program.
The successful candidate will continue to build an enriching program that integrates with the Lower School curriculum and school-wide initiatives such as global leadership and character education. The librarian eagerly collaborates with classroom teachers as well as specialists in the areas of technology, Design Thinking, art, etc. The librarian must be an energetic, dynamic, and inquisitive individual with enthusiasm for exploring and implementing new technologies and teaching methods aligned with 21
-century learning. Flexibility and curiosity are key characteristics, as well as a love of children, a good sense of humor, and an extensive knowledge of children’s literature.
This position reports to the Director of Libraries. The staff includes one library assistant and two-dozen library volunteers. The librarian’s focus is on teaching and special programs; the assistant handles technical services. The Lower School is made up of 366 students in grades Pre-First through five. There are three classes per grade for a total of 18 classes.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Guided by the school’s mission “to create prepared, confident citizens of the world” and the libraries’ scope and sequence, the librarian will ensure that students know how a library works and understand research fundamentals, while fostering a love of books and reading. Specific duties include:
Oversees all aspects of managing the Lower School Library.
Creates a welcoming and vibrant atmosphere.
Works closely with faculty to incorporate library services and resources into classroom assignments.
Provides individual and group instruction to teach research skills (meets with each class once per week).
Provides assistance to help students and faculty in accessing, evaluating and using information.
Assists students, faculty and staff in the use of library resources.
Plans and conducts programs and activities, including storytelling, book talks, multimedia programs, author visits, book fairs, etc.
Coordinates library displays in conjunction with library lessons and events, the Lower School Noble Knights character-education program, seasonal events, global initiatives, etc.
Selects, receives, and organizes materials and equipment.
Assures timely opening and closing of library and administration of the circulation desk.
Prepares and administers budget for media center.
Trains and supervises student assistants and library volunteers.
Investigates technologies that will improve services and works with the technology team in planning, implementing and integrating technology in the library.
Serves on school-wide committees and participates in community projects relating to the library and the school.

Master's degree from an American Library Association accredited program, strongly preferred.
Five years related experience teaching in and supervising an elementary school library required.
Strong sense of humor, flexibility, and desire to work with elementary age children is required.
Attendance at evening and weekend functions is occasionally required.
