Chief purpose of this position in support of above mission or goal
The Associate University Librarian for Research and Learning organizes and directs library assets – spaces, people, systems, funding – to advance faculty and student success through diverse, well-maintained spaces dedicated to academic pursuit; expert assistance to students engaged in curriculum and research work; teaching and learning programs that advance university goals for academic progress; equipment and expertise for digital production and creation, including scanning, copying, creating artifacts, and the like; and collections of rare and unique materials aligned with VCU’s academic strengths and needs. As part of the
Libraries senior leadership team, the
also helps lead and direct the entire library system throughout the university in fulfilling the mission of the

Libraries’ public-facing programs for the
community principally housed on VCU’s Monroe Park Campus. Working with the Division’s five department heads, the
oversees and coordinates faculty and research support; undergraduate and graduate education; access to spaces, equipment, and expertise for media and makerspace technologies; circulation, information, and research assistance; special collections and archives; and the spaces of the nationally renowned James Branch Cabell Library.

Demonstrated vision and creativity for quality improvement in programs that advance teaching, learning, and research, including creative use of information technologies for non-resident populations and courageous innovation in service initiatives. Understanding of and experience with developing library spaces that catalyze student and faculty academic work. A strong record of scholarly and professional activity; excellent skills in mentoring and leading faculty and staff. Superb expertise in strategic planning and visioning, budgeting, project management, and people management. Exemplary interpersonal skills and communications skills; stellar record in leading staff and institutions toward innovative solutions and enhancements that advance the overall goals of the library and its parent institution.
