DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Houston Public Library (HPL) is a seeking energetic, flexible, team-oriented person with a passion for customer service to work as a Library Service Specialist with an International Services focus at the Scenic Woods Regional Library, located in Northeast Houston. The library has an active programming calendar with computer classes, English Conversation classes, story time for toddlers, video gaming, movies, and crafts. Successful candidates will communicate effectively, provide exceptional customer service, enjoy working with, learning, and teaching new and emerging technologies, be at ease multitasking in a fast-paced public service setting and enjoy interacting with people of all ages from diverse backgrounds.
Regular duties of the International Services Library Service Specialist will include:
• Enjoy working with a culturally diverse community and apply an energetic and enthusiastic approach to attracting newcomers to the Houston Public Library;
• Lead and coordinate English classes (ESOL), Citizenship classes, and adult literacy classes at the location and help to create curricula for the classes with direction from the International Services Team;
• Play an active role in connecting underserved populations to library and community resources and opportunities;
• Assist with planning and implementing special events for both the location and system-wide;
• Greet and interact with customers at the customer service desk to find basic information and library materials;
• Facilitate the use of the public computers and laptops, and troubleshooting technology-related issues;
• Provide information regarding library services, programs, policies, and procedures;
• Retrieve library materials for customers and shelving returned materials;
• Collect fines and fees using computer-based software; and
• Work one evening a week and every other weekend (Saturday and/or Sunday).
• Perform other administrative duties and projects as assigned.
HPL serves a population of 2.2 million citizens through a network of 42 library locations spread out across the Houston area.

Position requires stooping and bending; lifting of library materials up to 20 pounds or an equivalent weight. Must be able to move freely throughout the library to file/retrieve library materials.
Requires a Bachelor's degree.
No experience is required.
Directly related professional experience may be substituted for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.
Preference will be given to applicants who have: Proficient computer skills and working knowledge of Microsoft Office; Experience working with people of diverse backgrounds; Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; Ability to build positive relationships with community partners; and To better serve our diverse communities, fluency in a foreign language and/or experience providing ESL instruction is highly preferred.
