Job Summary
The Information Resources (IR) Specialist Intermediate is a member of the Scholarly Publishing & Intellectual Access Services Unit and of varying cross-departmental work groups. The IR Specialist Intermediateperforms metadata creation and original and/or copy cataloging of materials in a variety of formats and languages, and resolves complex cataloging problems. The IR Specialist Intermediate views challenges and problems within the context of departmental and library wide goals, develops areas of expertise, and acts as a contributing member of a variety of cross-departmental committees and teams formed to accomplish ongoing or one-time assignments. The IR Specialist Intermediate works under the general supervision of the Scholarly Publishing & Intellectual Access Services Unit Leader and receives functional supervision from the Information Resources Specialist Lead.
Responsibilities*
Cataloging, classification, authority control, metadata, database maintenance
Perform copy and original cataloging and re-cataloging of materials, using RDA and Library of Congress classification, according to national and local standards. Material may be in any language or format, and usually requires considerable knowledge, experience, analytical ability, and judgment
Resolve cataloging and classification issues and document decisions and practices
Responsible for descriptive cataloging with subject analysis and authority work
Responsible for seeing that related checkin and item records are created and contain accurate information
Review, analyze, and make changes to the library’s online catalog to enhance access, as needed
Assist with the evaluation, editing, and loading of records from vendors or third-party sources
Confer with staff in other units and departments if there are problems with the handling of an item, and for making provision for the physical handling of unusual items
Serve as a source of information about cataloging, classification, and authority control practices; provide training and problem-solving to other staff, both within and outside Scholarly Publishing & Intellectual Access Services Unit
Process routine and non-routine transfer/withdrawals by modifying online bibliographic, item, and checkin records
Create and/or update Unit manuals and forms
Other Unit and Library-wide work
Receive materials from a variety of vendors, donated items, and US depository and EU depository materials, among others
Assist with the completion of official biannual Collection Statistics and portions of the monthly statistics
Search unsolicited serials, following the established procedures
Participate in Unit and Library-wide meetings
Participate in short- and long-term Unit and Library-wide planning and revision of practices and procedures
Other duties or special projects as assigned
Required Qualifications*
3 years library experience and Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Experience with cataloging and metadata creation
Attention to detail
Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively
Desired Qualifications*
3-5 years cataloging experience in a public, special or academic library
Experience cataloging legal materials
Experience with Innovative Interface’s Sierra LMS
At least a reading-level proficiency in one or more non-English European languages
Additional Information
Supervision Received
Administrative and general supervision received from the Head of Scholarly Publishing & Intellectual Access. Functional supervision received from the Information Resources Specialist Lead.
