JOB SUMMARY:
This position performs a full range of supportive and/or paraprofessional tasks in any function of the library including acquisition, cataloging, interlibrary loans, reference and circulation, supervising Library runners, and providing assistance to the Library Information Specialist, teachers, students and other library users.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Valid Illinois Paraprofessional License with a Paraprofessional Educator Endorsement registered in Lake County.
Certified librarian preferred.
SALARY RANGE:
Starting at $19.56/hour
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
1. Knowledge of and respect for the diverse backgrounds (cultural, linguistic, environmental) of students and how these characteristics affect the student's life and learning;
2. Knowledge of basic library/media procedures;
3. Knowledge of Microsoft products including, but not limited to, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint an Access);
4. Knowledge of relevant laws, rules, regulations, and District policies and procedures;
5. Knowledge of recordkeeping procedures;
6. Knowledge of student management techniques that support the school's mission;
7. Basic knowledge of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) program and use of yellow tickets with runners, special education student volunteers and the general student population;
8. Basic knowledge of library and information science research tools, techniques and practices;
9. Basic knowledge of library classification systems;
10. Interpersonal skills;
11. Oral and written communication skills;
12. Skill in locating information on educational Internet resources to locate materials in the library's collection for students, teachers and staff;;
13. Ability to apply the principles of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS);
14. Ability to assist and reinforce elements that support a safe, healthy, and effective teaching and learning environment;
15. Ability to assist in adapting instructional strategies and materials according to the needs of the student, under the direction of a licensed teacher;
16. Ability to be sensitive and respectful in communications regarding all children and families, regardless of differences in cultural heritage, lifestyle, values, and home environment;
17. Ability to collect and record attendance data on Skyward for students who serve as library runners;
18. Ability to communicate verbally and in writing;
19. Ability to draw on knowledge and resources regarding a variety of developmental and age-appropriate instructional methods, techniques, and materials when supporting the instruction of the licensed teacher/Library Information Specialist;
20. Ability to effectively employ a variety of strategies that reinforce positive behavior;
21. Ability to establish and maintain rapport with students;
22. Ability to follow verbal and written direction of licensed teachers, seeking clarification as needed;
23. Ability to learn and adapt to new technology;
24. Ability to operate automated, electronic, audio?visual and technology?based hardware, software and equipment;
25. Ability to perform the technical services required to support the library/media program;
26. Ability to prepare and organize materials to support teaching and learning, as directed by a licensed teacher/Library Information Specialist;
27. Ability to read and interpret routine printed materials such as charts, diagrams, maps, or instructional materials;
28. Ability to reinforce the development of student social skills by using appropriate strategies to modify the environment;
29. Ability to use ethical practices for confidential communication about students;
30. Ability to use the Follett Destiny circulation and catalog systems and word processing;
31. Ability to use strategies that promote student responsibility in following library policies and procedures;
32. Ability to work with and offer guidance to students with respect to library procedures, policies and provide help with assignments (e.g., paper formatting, and locating materials in collection);
33. Ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The following identifies the primary and essential functions of the position and is not intended to be an exhaustive listing of all duties.
1. Assists in checking out library equipment to teachers and staff;
2. Assists in maintaining and updating online catalog ;
3. Assists in ordering and processing new materials;
4. Assists in preparing bibliographies;
5. Assists in the preparation of bulletin boards and displays;
6. Assists in the training of teachers and students in the use of the online catalog and databases;
7. Assists patrons in locating and using library materials and equipment, answering questions, gathering materials, demonstrating use of equipment and operating audio visual equipment;
8. Assists students and teachers in location of print and electronic resources;
9. Assists students and teachers with the setup and use of audio visual and computer equipment;
10. Assists teachers and students in the operation of equipment;
11. Assists with automated inventory;
12. Assists with class activities held in the Library/Media Center;
13. Assists with copyright law compliance for print and electronic resources within the school;
14. Assists with displays and other special projects as needed;
15. Assists with gathering books and other materials for teachers;
16. Assists with keeping statistical records on library's usage and circulation;
17. Assists with submitting IT SchoolDude requests;
18. Assists with supervision of students;
19. Assists with the cataloging of manuals, literature and equipment (e.g. audio visual equipment, , library books in print and electronic formats);
20. Assists with the compilation of library statistics for number of classes using library, number of library lessons, and circulation;
21. Assists with the maintenance of patron records in the Destiny online circulation system;
22. Assists with the maintenance of the library collection including shelving books, reading shelves, adding and withdrawing items, mending and repairing items and assisting with inventory;
23. Assists with the maintenance of the Destiny online catalog. ;
24. Assists with the planning and development of curriculum/reading related programs, e.g. Abe Lincoln Book Award, Hispanic Heritage Month, Black History Month, and School Library Month and book talks, etc.;
25. Checks books and materials in and out;
26. Checks student passes;
27. Circulates books and other library materials using Destiny's online catalog system;
28. Follows federal and state laws as well as School Board policies, rules and regulations;
29. Fosters an atmosphere that encourages student and faculty to use the library and technology facilities;
30. Handles payment procedures for lost books and equipment: Sends documentation of lost items to Office and directs students to office to pay fines;
31. Helps students and staff locate materials through the use of the Destiny online catalog systems;
32. Laminates materials and creates posters using the Poster machine;
33. Maintains a clean, orderly and attractive environment and assists in the preparation of displays;
34. Maintains confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters;
35. Maintains equipment records in the Destiny online catalog and assists with inventory;
36. Maintains library materials;
37. Maintains Library Sign-up Binders (Day and After School Hours) for scheduled use of the Library/Media Center;
38. Maintains records of receipt for magazine subscriptions;
39. Notifies teachers of overdue books through the distribution of overdue notices;
40. Operates technical equipment such as computers, copiers, printers, audiovisual equipment and closed?circuit television;
41. Organizes same on display shelves;
42. Participates in professional activities and meetings;
43. Participates successfully in the training programs offered to increase skill and proficiency related to assignment;
44. Performs general administrative support responsibilities including typing, filing, and compiling statistics;
45. Performs online catalog maintenance activities such as withdrawing item and patron records and marking items Lost;
46. Performs reference tasks such as searching for material and answering reference questions;
47. Performs stack maintenance activities including shelving and shifting of material;
48. Prepares or assists in the preparation of all required reports and maintains all appropriate records;
49. Prints overdue book notices twice a year and manages distribution of notices to students and Office;
50. Receives and processes orders for print and non-print materials;
51. Retrieves bibliographic information from automated library systems for circulation, interlibrary loan or copy cataloging purposes;
52. Performs related duties as requested.
