Job Summary:

The curator for the Archives of Women of the Southwest (AWSW) will build, preserve, promote, and provide access to collections in women's history. This is a full-time position, funded by a successful endowment campaign to raise funds to support the work of the curator. The curator will have chief responsibility for working with donors to build the Archives of Women of the Southwest and will be closely involved with SMU classes that bear on women's history, from the undergraduate to graduate level. The Curator will also work with visiting scholars from around the country, including the screening and selection of Ruth Morgan visiting fellows. The curator will increase the usefulness and visibility of the AWSW, supporting SMU's teaching and research. Classification of Librarian 1 or 2 will be determined at time of hire based on experience, and qualifications.

Essential Functions:

Analyze and process existing collections using national standards and professional judgement; curate exhibits.

Create finding aids, guides to the collection and catalog records and digital surrogates as needed.

Collection development: work with donors and dealers to acquire collections in women's history.

Provide reference service to SMU faculty, students, and visiting scholars; select visiting fellows in women's history.

Contribute to print and online publications; seek professional development, continued research, and writing.

Service on DeGolyer Library, SMU, and outside committees.

Education and Experience:

Master's degree from an ALA-accredited program or advanced degree in a related discipline with professional experience in archives or special collections.

Subject expertise in an area relevant to the collection is required.

Experience in a research library is preferred.

Professional experience processing manuscript/archival collections is desired.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Candidate must demonstrate a strong knowledge of Women’s history and American history.

Candidate must demonstrate strong verbal and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to collaborate productively with donors, with faculty, and with students and scholars.

Candidate must also demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively in writing.

Candidate must have the ability to work independently, as well as part of a team.

Candidate must possess strong problem-solving skills with the ability to think collaboratively, strategically and creatively.

Candidate must have strong time management, organizational and planning skills. Must also possess a strong focus on attention to detail.

Strong project management skills are essential.

Working knowledge of Microsoft Office is essential; ContentDM, social media, library integrated systems is preferred.

The position has occasional evening and weekend work for exhibit openings, lectures and events.
