rnThe Elementary School Library Assistant plays a large part in ensuring that students have productive library experiences. This is accomplished in a variety of ways, including keeping the library neat and tidy, shelving books accurately, and checking books in and out in a timely manner. This individual also assists students in locating appropriate reading material. The Library Assistant assists students in accessing and using technology tools, but does not provide direct instruction. This position is responsible for greeting guests cordially, making them feel welcome in the library and helping to ensure that their needs are met.

rn ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

rn Accurately shelving books, and processing magazine and other library materials.
rn Cataloging new books into the Follett system.
rn Repair and clean books and magazines.
rn Maintain patron and circulation records.

rn OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:
rn Assist Librarian with clerical tasks such as filing, sorting, photocopying, and light correspondence.
rn Greet students, staff, parents, community members, and other visitors upon their entrance to the library.
rn Work with and train student library aides.
rn Responsible for maintaining records for overdue, lost and damaged books. This would include collecting fines, and notifying teachers and parents of overdue books.
rn Assist Librarian with displays corresponding with holidays, special events, celebrations, etc.
rn Responsible for scheduling and coordinating use of audiovisual equipment and software.
rn Assist Librarian with annual inventory.
rn May periodically be asked to assist individual students who are visiting the library.

rn REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
rn Education and Experience
rnHigh school diploma or equivalent
rnOne (1) year of experience working with the public
rn
rn ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
rnWork scheduled hours on a consistent basis
rn
rn PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
rnBasic knowledge of the Follett System, and willingness and ability to increase knowledge to a high level of proficiency.
rnBasic knowledge of the Internet helpful, and willingness and ability to increase knowledge to a high level of proficiency.
rnBasic knowledge of Accelerated Reader, Scholastic Reading Counts, Avery Label Pro, or STAR testing may also be helpful in some buildings.

rn PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

rnWhile performing the duties of this job, the employee will regularly stand and walk, bend neck and back, use hands for repetitive grasping and pushing/pulling. The employee may occasionally be required to squat, kneel, and use hands for fine manipulation. The employee will constantly be required to sit for extended periods of time and use a computer screen and keyboard, and occasionally be required to climb stairs/ladder, lift and reach overhead, crawl, and lift/carry. The employee must constantly lift/carry up to 5 pounds and must frequently lift /carry up to 10 pounds. The employee will occasionally lift/carry a maximum of 20 lbs. The employee is occasionally required to push/pull a maximum weight of 100 pounds.

rn WORK ENVIRONMENT:

rnWhile performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in indoor conditions and regularly works near video display. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The position constantly deals with frequent interruptions, demanding deadlines, and occasionally deals with angry and distraught employees, students and community members.

rn WORK SCHEDULE
rnThis position typically works Monday through Friday, 180 days per year, school days.

rn REPORTING RELATIONSHIP
rnThis position reports to, and is evaluated by the building Principal, or designee. This position may receive some direction and setting of priorities from the Office Manager.

rn LEVEL OF COMPENSATION
rnLevel 3 on the FWEA-ESP salary schedule.
