Overview
The New York Public Library (NYPL) has been an essential provider of free books, information, ideas, and education for all New Yorkers for more than 100 years. NYPL\u2019s neighborhood libraries in the Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island\u2014many of which date to Andrew Carnegie\u2019s visionary philanthropy at the turn of the 20th century\u2014are being transformed into true centers of educational innovation and service, and vital community hubs that provide far more than just free books and materials.  
 
The Andrew Heiskell Braille and Talking Book Library, part of The New York Public Library, serves patrons who are eligible to borrow materials from the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS) in the five boroughs of New York City and Long Island.  It also serves the general neighborhood community with NYPL services and programs.
Principal Responsibilities
Reporting to the Chief Librarian, the Managing Librarian for Programming, Outreach and Public Service:

Directly manages the Reader Services team of 6 staff members with accountability for staff hiring, staff development, team-building, coaching and performance management
Coordinates outreach initiatives, develops and maintains partnerships with public libraries (including departments within NYPL), non-profits, schools, agencies, and service providers of people with visual or physical disabilities or dyslexia, including presenting at meetings and events, and coordinates Reader Services team participation in outreach efforts throughout NYC and Long Island. 
Oversees staff efforts to plan and deliver engaging public programs and special events, evaluate needs, and publicize events, and spearheads the creation of innovative new projects. 
Works with the Chief Librarian to develop public service improvement initiatives including, optimizing physical space usage and staff allocation, addressing staff and patron needs, and optimizing staff procedures and workflow.  
Serves as administrator of the Library\u2019s patron and collection management database and oversees maintenance of the braille and talking book collection, accuracy of bibliographic and patron data, and materials selection by Readers Services team. Collects and reports on statistics. 
Working with the Chief Librarian, develops strategies to anticipate and address the Library\u2019s role in shaping the digital and general future of braille and talking book service, and the needs of patrons with disabilities at NYPL service, implementing the RA side of nationally coordinated initiatives from NLS, and staying in touch with other regional libraries for best practices
Provides public service by phone, email, and in person
The Managing Librarian has overall accountability for the Library when the Chief is not in the building, and has overall accountability for opening and closing procedures.

Required Education & Experience

ALA-accredited Master\u2019s degree in Library and Information Studies
1 or more years of progressively responsible work in a library environment, including some supervisory experience

Minimum Qualifications

Demonstrated customer service skills, including the ability to work patiently, thoroughly, and accurately with patrons who may need extended assistance
Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, including the ability to deliver effective presentations to the public
Successful track record of demonstrating creativity, flexibility, and initiative in accommodating community and staff needs
Demonstrated ability to plan and deliver a diverse program of activities and perform outreach

Starting Salary
Hours35 hours per week, 5 days a week, to be spread out between Monday through Saturday, with rotating weeknight (Tuesday / Thursday) and Saturday coverage
