Profile

GENERAL PURPOSE: Under general direction, performs a variety of professional librarian functions in support of New Braunfels Public Library operations; provides reference and reader’s advisory services to patrons; instructs the public in the use of library computers and equipment; coordinates and delivers library programming; and performs other specialized duties relative to area of assignment.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.

• Assists in ensuring the delivery of high quality library programs and services to the community.
• Provides customer assistance and reference/reader’s advisory services to library patrons; utilizes print, non-print, and electronic resources to respond to patron inquiries, provide reader’s advisory assistance, and/or locate library materials.
• Addresses and facilitates the timely resolution of patron concerns and complaints; responds to patron requests for information in person and via telephone, fax, mail, text, and email.
• Instructs patrons in the use of public computers, online catalogs, library databases, and mobile devices; may develop lesson plans and prepare training materials for distribution to class participants.
• Assists in developing and implementing goals, objectives, policies, programs, procedures and work standards for an assigned division.
• Plans, develops, promotes, and delivers library programming to the community.
• Represents the library in meetings with the public, citizen groups and other agencies.
• Develops annual budget requirements and monitors expenditures for an assigned area.
• Provides training and/or supervises the work activities of assigned library personnel and/or volunteers as required; prepares staff schedules; recruits volunteers as assigned.
• Participates in compiling statistical data and/or developing and updating library policies and procedures as required.
• Monitors developments in the library field, including emerging technologies.
• Participates in activities of professional associations as time permits.
• Participates in maintaining and updating the Library’s website, online calendar, social media pages, and/or E-Resources; plans, develops, promotes and delivers further outreach services such as live chat, e-books, and/or library web or social media pages.
• Assists in application for outside funding for library programs.
• Prepares statistical reports as requested monthly and annually.
• Preforms vacation and temporary relief as required.
• Acts as Librarian in Charge and performs related duties as assigned.
• Performs other duties as assigned or required.

MAY PERFORM SOME OF THE FOLLOWING TASKS BY AREA OF RESPONSIBILITY:

Youth Services:
• Plans, implements and evaluates library programs and services which fulfill the diverse educational, recreational and personal needs of local teens and tweens.
• Participates in collection management activities; selects and deselects library materials including books, periodicals, audiovisual items, and reference materials; evaluates donated items to determine the appropriateness of addition to the Library’s collection.
• Curates content, including digital resources and special collections, for and with teen and tween patrons, based on teen and tween needs and interests.
• Adopts a connected learning approach to presenting programs, classes and events for and with teens and tweens so that they educate, inform and inspire.
• Instructs teens, tweens, and caregivers in information gathering, research skills and digital literacy skills.
• Develops and maintains effective relationships with schools, community groups, agencies and non-profits that target youth to plan and deliver programs and services that meet needs and interests of local teens and tweens.
• Coordinates daily activities of staff and volunteers assigned to youth services.

 
Children’s Services:
• Develops, conducts and promotes programs for children and caregivers which encourage reading, viewing, and listening skills and the use of the library facilities and materials.
• Plans and delivers early literacy programming that focuses on developing early literacy skills in babies, toddlers, and preschoolers, based on best practices set forth in Every Child Ready to Read 2 (ECRR2).
• Offers resources and services that empower parents and caregivers to encourage early literacy in the home.
• Develops and maintains effective relationships with schools, daycares, preschools, and other community organizations and agencies that serve children and their caregivers. Works with local agencies and organizations to plan and deliver programs and outreach that meet the needs of local children and their caregivers.
• Participates in collection management activities; selects and deselects library materials including books, periodicals, audiovisual items, and reference materials; evaluates donated items to determine the appropriateness of addition to the Library’s collection.
• Assists in selecting personnel for the children's library.
• Curates content, including digital resources and special collections, for and with children patrons, based on their needs and interests.
• Develops orientation programs, in-service training, and continuing education opportunities for all staff and volunteers in the Children's Room.
• Directs the daily operation of the Children's Room to ensure the highest quality service possible

****Required Education:
Master’s Degree in Library Science or Library and Information Science from an American Library Association accredited institution or obtain within six (6) months of hire.
Required Experience:
• One (1) year experience as a librarian in a public library environment preferred.
• One (1) year experience with Integrated Library Systems and web applications preferred.
• Bilingual (English/Spanish) strongly preferred.
