Position Available for 2018-2019 School Year\r
Position Summary:  Librarian \/ Media Specialist\r
Education Level and Certification:  Bachelors degree or higher required. Must possess at all times during employment a Nebraska Teaching Certificate with a Library Media Specialist endorsement and such other endorsements as may be required by NDE Rules 10 and 24.\r
Reports To: Principal\r
Performance Responsibilities and Job Tasks: \r
\tAdminister school library and media program.\r
\tProvide for the reasonable care and safety of students under the Librarian\/Media Specialist’s supervision.\r
\tSupervise students in out-of-classroom activities as assigned.\r
\tProvide care for students, including reporting suspected child abuse or neglect to supervisor and provide medication administration as assigned.\r
\tParticipate in faculty committees and the sponsorship of activities as assigned.\r
\tParticipate in professional activities and staff development as assigned and as needed to maintain professional competence and to perform duties.\r
\tDevelop and maintain a positive rapport with students and parents.\r
\tDevelop and maintain a positive and professional working relationship with other staff and administration.\r
\tProvide for proper care, maintenance and reasonable security of all District property in the Librarian\/Media Specialist’s custody.\r
\tUtilize instructional materials and other resources in a competent and effective manner, including computer, e-mail, and other technology to perform assigned duties.\r
\tMaintain confidentiality of information concerning staff, students, and parents in accordance with law and District rules.\r
\tAdhere to the code of ethics of the District and Nebraska Department of Education (NDE Rule 27). The Librarian\/Media Specialist must serve as a positive role model for staff and students.\r
\tPerform other tasks or duties as assigned by the Board, the Superintendent or the supervisor.\r
Media Program Tasks:\r
\tSearch standard reference materials, including on-line sources and the Internet, in order to answer patrons’ reference questions and assist in furnishing or locating that information.\r
\tAnalyze requests for information in the media, and assist in furnishing or locating that information.\r
\tTeach students to search for information using databases.\r
\tKeep records of circulation and materials.\r
\tSupervise media program’s budgeting, planning, and personnel activities.\r
\tCheck media materials in and out of the library.\r
\tExplain use of library facilities, resources, equipment, and services, and provide information about library policies.\r
\tEvaluate and select materials needed to meet both the curricular and individual needs of students, teachers, and administrators who will be using the materials, and periodically remove outdated or non-functional materials, consistent with established policies and materials.\r
\tCode, classify, and catalog books, publications, films, audiovisual aids, and other library materials based on subject matter or standard library classification systems and maintain records of materials.\r
\tLocate unusual or unique information in response to specific requests.\r
\tDirect, train and monitor staff and student resources provided to assist in the library and media program.\r
\tRespond to media patron complaints, taking action as necessary.\r
\tOrganize collections of books, publications, documents, audiovisual aids, and other reference materials for convenient access.\r
\tDevelop and administer library policies and procedures.\r
\tDevelop information access aids such as indexes and annotated bibliographies, web pages, electronic pathfinders, and on-line tutorials.\r
\tPlan and deliver student-centered programs and services such as special services for corporate clients, storytelling for children, newsletters, or programs for special groups.\r
\tCompile lists of books, periodicals, articles, and audiovisual materials on particular subjects.\r
\tFacilitate resource sharing with other schools or libraries.\r
\tAssemble and arrange display materials.\r
\tConfer with teachers, parents, and community organizations to develop, plan, and conduct programs in reading, viewing, and communication skills.\r
\tCompile lists of overdue materials, and notify borrowers that their materials are overdue.\r
\tPromote and disseminate resources that support the curriculum and meet diverse learning needs.\r
\tPrepare bibliographies and special reserve collections on topics as requested.\r
\tPromote an inviting and student-centered atmosphere in the Library Media Center.\r
\tPlan and administer school-wide events and programs to promote literacy.\r
Media Teaching Tasks:\r
\tEstablish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects, and communicate those objectives to students.\r
\tInstruct students individually and in groups, using various teaching methods such as lectures, discussions, and demonstrations.\r
\tPrepare, administer, and grade tests and assignments in order to evaluate students’ progress.\r
\tAdapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students’ varying needs and interests.\r
\tConfer with other staff members to plan and schedule lessons promoting learning, following approved curricula and to integrate media materials with the instructional program.\r
\tConfer with parents or guardians, teachers, counselors, and administrators in order to resolve students' behavioral and academic problems. Utilize resources to effectively communicate with others with different communication abilities (e.g. non-English speaking, hearing impaired).\r
\tEnforce administration policies and rules governing students.\r
\tEstablish and enforce rules for behavior and procedures for maintaining order among the students for whom they are responsible.\r
\tGuide and counsel students with adjustment and\/or academic problems, or special academic interests.\r
\tPerform the tasks described in the job description for a teacher applicable to the level (elementary, middle school or high school) in which the Librarian\/Media Specialist is assigned.\r
Required Knowledge:\r
The Librarian\/Media Specialist is to possess and effectively utilize knowledge in the following areas:\r
\tSubject Matter—Knowledge of the effective administration and implementation of a school media program.\r
\tCustomer and Personal Service—Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.\r
\tEnglish Language—Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.\r
\tAdministration and Management—Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, human resources modeling, leadership technique, production methods, and coordination of people and resources.\r
\tEducation and Training—Knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum and training design, teaching and instruction for individuals and groups, and the measurement of training effects.\r
\tComputers and Electronics—Knowledge of circuit boards, processors, chips, electronic equipment, and computer hardware and software, including applications and programming.\r
\tClerical—Knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures and systems such as word processing, managing files and records, stenography and transcription, designing forms, and other office procedures and terminology.\r
\tCommunications and Media—Knowledge of media production, communication, and dissemination techniques and methods. This includes alternative ways to inform and entertain via written, oral, and visual media.\r
\tPsychology—Knowledge of human behavior and performance; individual differences in ability, personality, and interests; learning and motivation; psychological research methods; and the assessment and treatment of behavioral and affective disorders.\r

Essential Functions: The essential functions of the Librarian\/Media Specialist position include: (1) regular, dependable attendance on the job; (2) the ability to perform the identified tasks and to possess and utilize the identified knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the identified work activities; and, (3) the ability to perform the following identified physical requirements:\r
