Position Summary and Responsibilities
The Vassar College Library is seeking a Library Specialist to join the User Services Department. This position will report to the Head of User Services, and join a team of 8 (eight) Library Assistants and Specialists. Under the direction of the Head of User Services, the Library Specialist opens the Library, staffs the circulation area, and coordinates the activities at the main service desk in the main library as well as the Art Library. Duties include hiring, training, and scheduling the Circulation student staff as well as managing the overall desk coverage schedule for the User Services team. The incumbent is also responsible for processing bills for lost items, monitoring department email, monitoring service quality, and making recommendations for improving services as a whole. Some evenings and weekends may be required. Working closely with the Head of User Services, the Library Specialist will occupy a highly flexible and responsive position within the Department. Other duties as assigned.
The ideal candidate will be highly motivated with a strong sense of responsibility and curiosity. Customer service, supervision, training and/or teaching in college libraries is strongly preferred. Experience performing circulation desk procedures which include but are not limited to checking in and checking out materials, and registering patrons. Bachelor's Degree preferred Candidate must be able to provide excellent service in a pleasant manner to library patrons and staff. Friendly, customer service oriented personality, strong attention to detail and organization. Demonstrated ability for carrying out tasks in an accurate and timely manner. Ability to work in a team environment. Communicates effectively. Strong customer service skills and commitment to providing service effectively in a diverse environment preferred. Ability to work independently and follow through on tasks with minimal direction. Ability to manage and prioritize tasks. Demonstrated leadership skills. The candidate should have an understanding of the importance of the Library's role in achieving the educational mission of a College or University. This will be demonstrated by coursework at the college-level and/or equivalent experience within an academic setting. Sound judgment and ability to analyze information and solve problems within the scope of his/her responsibilities. Demonstrated proficiency and capabilities with personal computers and standard computer office applications such as Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, Filemaker Pro, PowerPoint, or other productivity software and with the Web strongly preferred. Ability to lift up to 30 pounds. Must be able to push heavy book trucks, move and unpack boxes preferred.
