Responsible for sorting and shelving library books and materials. Also, responsible for assisting the library staff in performing related customer service and clerical work.
Essential Job Functions
Retrieve items and return materials to their appropriate place on the shelves, according to alphabetical or numeric filing.
Straighten shelves and check for proper order. Locate missing items.
Sort materials and lift book bins.
Transfer library materials from book carts to appropriate locations.
Assist in unloading books from van.
Assist in lifting, moving, and setting up heavy items such as computer equipment or furniture.
Distribute periodicals, newspapers and mail to appropriate locations. Pull old periodicals for discarding, recycling and/or resale.
Check-in and trace materials using a computerized system.
Provide basic level assistance for library users and refer users to appropriate library staff.
Preferred Knowledge - Abilities & Skills
Some experience in a library environment
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
General knowledge of standard library filing systems
Skill to operate a computer keyboard to enter and retrieve information regarding books and materials
Ability to understand and implement oral and written directions
Ability to drive a vehicle
Licenses & Certifications Valid Class C Texas driver's license
Physical Tasks & Working ConditionsThe incumbent works in a typical library environment, but physical labor is required. Occasional outdoor work, and travel between city and library facilities may occur. Primary environment will be in a climate controlled, indoor atmosphere with some exposure to dust and occasional unpleasant conditions. Physical tasks will include lifting, squatting, bending, stooping, reaching overhead and carrying supplies, as needed to accomplish the tasks of the activity on a daily basis. Must be able to reach materials at 90\u201d height shelving or shelving at floor level, lift/carry up to 50 pounds regularly, and push/pull 200 pound wheeled book cart. Must also be able to utilize keyboard and peripherals, handheld mobile devices, and multi-function office phones. REQUIRED WORK HOURS: The incumbent is required to work 19 hours per week, with varying hours, as needed to support operations. Hours include 9:00 a.m. through 9:00 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, and 9:00 a.m. through 6:00 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. REQUIRED WORK LOCATIONS: The incumbent must be available to work at any of the four (4) Garland Library locations.

The Recycling Center, Transfer Station, and Hinton Landfill will be closed Monday, Dec. 25 and Monday, Jan. 1. Environmental Waste Services' offices will be closed on Tuesday, Dec. 26. Phase 6 Cart Delivery Schedule Yellow Week: Jan. 23 – 26 Blue Week: Jan. 30 – Feb. 2 Once your blue cart is delivered you may keep your red bin. If you would like to recycle your red bin place it in the blue container or drop it off at Garland’s Recycling Center, located at 1426 Commerce St. Please call 972-205-3500 or email EWS@GarlandTX.gov if you have any questions. Don't Go Tarpless! The operator of any vehicle arriving at the Hinton Landfill, wood recycling center, or Garland's transfer station which does not have a suitable cover placed over the vehicle's load, shall pay a surcharge of $20 per City of Garland Code of Ordinances, Chapter 52, Article II, Sec. 52.47(F). The transfer station and landfill sell tarps for $10 each, but covering and securing your load from the beginning of your trip will be more effective at preventing litter.
