Distinguishing Features of Work Wichita Public Library has an immediate opening for a Library Assistant position at the Comotara Branch. This branch is a high-paced, vibrant, and popular site that requires outgoing customer service and excellent multi-tasking skills. \u00a0 General responsibilities of this position includes: customer assistance in all aspects of library service in person and by telephone (circulation, reader's advisory, public computing, and basic reference). Additional tasks include branch operations such as cash handling, shelving and shelf-reading, collection maintenance, opening and closing the branch, and miscellaneous duties as assigned.\u00a0 \u00a0 The employee selected for this position must be able to demonstrate a strong customer service orientation, work successfully with off-site supervision, possess excellent Polaris circulation and searching skills, demonstrate computer competency that includes the ability to assist others with basic public computing needs, and has a good knowledge of City and Library policies and procedures.\u00a0 \u00a0 This position is assigned to the Comotara branch however coverage at Rockwell will be scheduled as needed. At times, this employee will work alone at the branch. \u00a0 Hours: Tuesday \u2013 8:30-1:30; Wednesday \u2013 Friday \u2013 9:15 a.m. \u2013 2:15 p.m.; Saturday rotation (One week it is 1:45-6:15; next week 9:15 \u2013 2:15 and then the third Saturday off. (Weekday hours reduced when working a Saturday) This position will close at the first fifty (50) applications or by the posting end date, whichever comes first.\u00a0 This is paraprofessional work performing many support activities involved in operating a library by assisting professional librarians following established rules and procedures and policies. Library Assistants generally work in both technical and direct service to the customer. Provides friendly, high quality library service. An employee in this class shall perform routine general library work. Library Assistants may work on special projects. Works under the general direction and supervision of Senior Library Assistant, Section or Branch Manager. \u00a0 Examples of Work Performed Performs reference and\/or circulation work. Plans, prepares and presents programs. Assists with maintenance of collection (e.g. pulling holds, shelving, sorting, shelf reading, checking items in and out, etc.). Prepares displays. Provides basic reader's advisory services. In charge of a section or branch library as assigned. Mends and processes materials. Performs clerical work. Assists customers with basic technology needs (e.g. computer, e-reader and tablet needs). Assists customers with the use of library services. Serves on system-wide committees as assigned. Responsible for opening and\/or closing of a section or branch as assigned. Oversees work of volunteers. Dependent upon assignment, position may be required to travel to different work sites throughout the workday. Those positions will require reliable personal transportation. Examples are not intended to be all-inclusive. Other related duties may be assigned as needed. Requirements of Work Knowledge of standard library principles, practices, and methods Knowledge of standard computer keyboard configurations, office software and windows environments Knowledge of entering monetary transactions in a software program Knowledge of basic reader interest and of book titles and authors Ability to sort and file items in accordance with established procedures based on alphabetical and\/or numeric coding Knowledge of general reference practices Ability to manually count back change Ability to follow simple instructions Ability to perform repetitive tasks with speed and accuracy Ability to: push a loaded book cart, weighing up to 250 pounds; reach, bend, stoop, or squat and arrange books on library shelves; use manual office tools and supplies Ability to develop effective relationships with associates, outside agencies and the public Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, orally, in writing, and\/or by whatever creative means are necessary to cross communication barriers Required Experience and Training High School diploma and two years of library experience required including shelving, sorting, technology skills, customer service, and use of an integrated library system. Equivalent combination of experience and training may be considered.
