The purpose of the class is to develop and manage technical and/or service programming functions. The class is responsible for coordinating services and programs designed for patrons and/or staff at multiple locations or system-wide basis for the City Library and providing some supervisory direction for support staff. The class works within a general outline of work to be performed, and develops work methods and sequences under general supervision. This class requires working some evenings and weekends on a rotating schedule.

Typically reports to Library Customer Service Coordinator, Administrative Project Analyst, Librarian II or Library/Community Services Manager.

Example of Duties:

The City of Richmond Public Library System is seeking highly qualified candidates to fill the position of Library Associate II - Early Literacy. The incumbent is responsible for assisting with the coordination and implementation of the assigned library's internal and external literacy and learning efforts for parents and children. This position will operate out of the Main Library branch and will require some evening and weekend scheduling on a rotating basis.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

Assisting in planning, coordinating, developing and implementing programs, services, training and special activities related to support for children's early literacy success;

Advising children and caregivers on books and age-appropriate reading selections

Coordinating and executing programs, strategic literacy curriculum and special activities for children, young adults, and/or other patron groups

Assisting patrons and providing them with information regarding services and programs

Providing support with circulation functions, locating materials, computers and other library operating equipment

Supervising and training staff as directed by supervisor

Performing other related duties as assigned

Qualifications, Special Certifications and Licenses:

Minimum Qualifications:

Requires a Bachelor's degree in library science, literature, education, computer science or a related field and proficiency in general computer, Microsoft Office and Internet skills.

Requires three (3) years of public library experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience coordinating and implementing children literacy programs and parent educations programs

Experience planning and implementing cooperative programs and community projects

Knowledge of best practices for engaging at-risk parents with effective parenting

Ability to read, write, and speak Spanish desired

Requires work that involves walking or standing most of the time; and involves exerting up to 30 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis to lift and move library materials; and routine computer operations.
