The Broome County Public Library Board of Trustees seeks an enthusiastic, visionary, community-minded leader as its next Library Director. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong leadership skills, exhibit a clear vision and commitment to librarianship and community engagement, articulate and advocate the Library’s strategic directions, provide sound fiscal management, promote proactive leadership in technology integration, and promote collaborative relationships within the Library and throughout the community.

The Library has an annual budget of $1,968,631 supported by County funding with additional support from the City of Binghamton and New York State. The Broome County Public Library is chartered to serve Broome County’s 200,600 residents. It also serves as the Central Library of the Four County Library System’s 42 libraries in Broome, Chenango, Delaware and Otsego Counties. The Library was originally founded in 1903 and was housed in a Carnegie Library until 2000. The current 72,000 square-foot facility houses a Creation Station, Youth Services area, Local History Center and meeting rooms for the public. In 2017, a staff of 22.24 FTE provided services to 290,000 visitors, circulated 245,000 items, hosted more than 39,000 attendees for programs and logged 200,000 computer hours through the library website, in-house computers and wireless access.
Responsibilities The Library Director has overall responsibility for administration of staff, resources and resource development, long range planning, service delivery, comprehensive programs, government relations, public and community relations, fiscal affairs, personnel, and labor relations. Responsible for leading the Library to respond both positively and rapidly to changing community needs and demographics. Responsible for organizational development, contract negotiations and staff development. Responsible for fundraising, facilitating and maintaining close working relationships with the Broome County Legislature, County Executive’s Office, Four County Library System, The Friends of the Broome County Public Library and the City of Binghamton.
Requirements Graduation from an ALA accredited school or program with a graduate degree in library or information studies and possession of, or eligibility for, a New York State Public Librarian’s Professional Certificate and six or more years of satisfactory professional library experience in a library of recognized standing, two years or more which must have been in an administrative capacity.
Other preferred qualifications include: experience reporting to a governing board, successful fundraising skills, experience working with budgets, construction and/or renovation experience and working effectively with government officials and other public constituencies.
This position is a New York State Civil Service position.
Salary: $75,118 with a generous benefits package.
