Overview
The New York Public Library (NYPL) has been an essential provider of free books, information and education for all New Yorkers for more than 100 years. NYPL\u2019s neighborhood libraries in the Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island are being transformed into true centers of educational innovation and service, and vital community hubs that provide far more than free books and materials.
The Port Richmond Library, an original Carnegie library dating to 1905, serves a diverse and historic community. We align ourselves with the mission of the NYPL - to inspire lifelong learning, advance knowledge, and strengthen our communities - by providing quality collections, programming, internet access and public service to all of our Library users, and by reaching new community members.
Principal Responsibilities
The Library Information Assistant will work with all age groups to support patrons in their search for information, leisure reading, and the use of computers and digital devices. She or he will assist with the creation of, and will facilitate, Library programs and activities; and will conduct independent and team outreach in our community. As
a team member at a location with a large Hispanic immigrant population, he or she may participate in the development and maintenance of outreach, programming and collections for Spanish speaking community members. She or he may also assist with maintaining other aspects of the Library\u2019s collections as needed.
Under the general supervision of the Library Manager, the Library Information Assistant:
Provides circulation/reference service and instruction to library patrons of all ages using print and digital resources
Performs community outreach to promote and increase public participation and use of library services
Assists in planning and delivering library programs for children, teens and/or adults
Assists with collection development/weeding, reserves, opening/closing procedures and fines & fees collection
Performs duties for the benefit of each library patron in an environment of ethnic and linguistic diversity
Participate in updating and maintaining the content of the Library\u2019s Facebook page, and other social media as needed
Work collaboratively with branch team members and colleagues across the organization in order to serve the Library\u2019s mission

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor\u2019s degree required, preferably with a strong, well-rounded liberal arts background
Successfully demonstrated public service experience with the ability to work well with a diverse patronage
Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
Successfully demonstrated ability to work as part of a team
Strong organization and planning skills, including the ability to perform multiple projects or tasks simultaneously
Strong computer and other related technology skills, including MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint
Preferred Qualifications
Ability to communicate effectively in spoken and written Spanish, as well as in English (bilingual)
Basic understanding of emerging library technologies and urban public library issues
Preferably currently attending library school or a strong interest in this career path
Starting SalaryUSD $35,123.00/Yr.
Minimum Salary (with 2 years of NYPL service)USD $40,392.00/Yr.
