The individual, reporting to the Cataloging & Metadata Librarian (Rare Book Specialist), is responsible for complex copy cataloging for materials in all formats and languages, but primarily for Special Collections and University Archives materials. Provides original cataloging for materials under librarian supervision. This position may provide descriptive metadata for digital collections. Assists in training other staff in the department; may also supervise one or more student assistants. Acts as troubleshooter to identify and resolve complex copy cataloging problems and assists in authority control activities as needed.

This regular, full-time position works normal business hours.


Cataloging & Metadata

Receives, catalogs, and upgrades all levels of copy cataloging for new and retrospective titles in all formats and languages

Identifies and corrects discrepancies in copy cataloging, including description, classification and subject assignment

Adds classification numbers, name and subject headings to member copy as needed

Prepares original cataloging for titles with and without prior editions/format for review by departmental librarians

May assist departmental librarian(s) in assigning descriptive metadata for digital library initiatives

May assist the Cataloging & Metadata Services (Rare Book Specialist) with special projects related to Special Collections and University Archives materials cataloging

Other Duties

Participates in assigned database maintenance and quality control activities

Assists in special projects to support departmental goals and Library-wide initiatives.

Assists in training students or fellow staff catalogers in local cataloging practice, application of subject headings and classification, as well as use of Library of Congress authority files.

Communications, Relationships, and Service

Maintains helpful and supportive customer service behavior with all library customers internal and external.

Establishes effective and supportive interdepartmental relationships, and participates in cross training opportunities to increase library and unit effectiveness and to effectively disseminate information.

Communicates frequently and effectively with all University staff, faculty, and administrators in a timely manner regarding procedures, policies, and other necessary information.

When possible, participates in committees and teams within and outside the Libraries to provide services to the Libraries, University, and the Community.



This position reports to the Cataloging & Metadata Services (Rare Book Specialist).


This individual may supervise student assistants, as appropriate.

QUALIFICATIONS (Education, Experience, Skills, Training, etc.)

High School graduate

Minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience OR 3 years of college OR a combination of both

Basic data entry and/or word processing skills

Analytic and critical thinking skills

Aptitude for accuracy and detail

Ability to work cooperatively and productively with others

Ability to work independently in a team environment

Good oral and written English language communication skills

Excellent organizational skills

Excellent knowledge of basic standards for bibliographic description

Good knowledge of cataloging and metadata standards, such as RDA, MARC, and Library of Congress classification and subject headings.

Prior experience in copy cataloging

Working knowledge of one (1) foreign language
