Under administrative direction, will serve as the lead for programming, collection development, reader's advisory services, reference and outreach activities as related to the target audience, and provide technology and instruction to library patrons and staff. The Youth Services Librarian performs a range of professional library services for library patrons from birth through grade 12.

- Designs, plans, and implements developmental programs that range from early childhood education through to 12th grade; evaluates library programs and services on a dedicated schedule and proposes changes as necessary

- May act in a lead capacity as library person-in-charge in the absence of library branch management

- Plans, directs and provides outreach services to area schools, childcare providers, local organizations, Parent Teacher Association meeting, and conducts visits to school districts, other sites and serves as liaison to schools, association and organizations

- Assists in developing short-term and long-term goals and plans for collections, services and programs in keeping with mission of BiblioTech

- Develops and implements story hours, youth programs, and in coordination with other family programs and collaborates with other County outreach initiatives

- Provides staff training and support on new technologies and concept familiarity; provides instruction to customers in the use of internet, computers, printers, copiers, tablets, and e-book readers

- Stays abreast of new children's literature, media, and related trends; keeps current on childhood and early childhood developmental research; and seeks out information in continuing education opportunities in youth services programming trends, investigates and learns new technologies, and plans and presents cutting-edge programs

- Networks with colleagues and attends professional seminars and training events keeping abreast of service innovations and best practices for youth services

- Trains and supervises volunteers; works with civic groups and answers complex reference questions and performs readers' advisory for youth, their parents, and caregivers; and Interprets policies and procedures of the library to the public

- Supervises, evaluates, instructs, and collaborates with other library management staff; conducts periodic meetings of youth services staff facilitating communication, knowledge sharing, and program coordination and outreach; assumes responsibility of staff and building in the absence of other professional staff

Required Education:

Master's Degree in Library & Information Science from an ALA-accredited school

Required Experience:

- Three (3) years' progressively responsible library experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience

- Considerable knowledge of children's and young adult literature and of early literacy skills and early childhood development

- Excellent customer service and communication skills, and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and library customers; Enthusiasm and enjoyment in working with children and families

- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing; Ability to instruct customers using various technologies; Ability to work in a fast paced environment under pressure;

- Ability to develop, plan, and present library programs for children of many different ages;

- Ability to assist a diverse population of customers in a calm and courteous manner

- Ability to supervise technical staff; ability to comfortably communicate and engage the public through both oral and written communication; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, partners, co-workers, outside organizations, other County employees, Elected/Appointed Officials, other government agencies and the general public.

- Must have a valid driver's license

- Must secure and maintain a favorable background investigation and clearance

- Must clear a pre-employment physical and a pre-employment drug screen test

- May be required to work more than 40 hours during the workweek; may work weekends
