This is a 19-month, temporary full time appointment available starting April 1, 2018.

The University of California, Berkeley is seeking an Environmental Collections Project Archivist

for The Bancroft Library to process eight environmentallyfocused collections as part of a

National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) grant funded project. This is

a temporary, 19month appointment. The successful candidate will have demonstrated skills in

arrangement and description of manuscript materials, have demonstrated written and oral

communication skills, and have demonstrated proficiency at meeting goals and deadlines.

The Bancroft Library of the University of California, Berkeley, is one of the largest and most

heavily used libraries of rare materials in the West. Its holdings include more than 690,000

volumes, 175 million manuscript items, 9 million photographs and other pictorial materials,

86,000 microforms, 4.3 million digital files, and 25,000 maps, as well as numerous other

categories of unique material. The two largest collections are the Bancroft Collection of

Western and Latin Americana and the Rare Books Collection. The archival and rare book

materials of the Magnes Collection of Jewish Art and Life are also part of the Bancroft holdings.

Bancroft is home to three research groups: the Oral History Center (formerly the Regional Oral

History Office); the Mark Twain Papers; and the Center for the Tebtunis Papyri. The Bancroft

Library is an active center of teaching and research. Supporting the programs of about 20

campus departments annually, it mounts a regular series of public exhibitions, roundtable

Responsibilities

The Environmental Collections Project Archivist will be responsible for arranging and describing

eight collections documenting the work of various environmental organizations and activists.

The Environmental Collections Project Archivist will work under the general supervision of the

Head of Archival Processing and will consult with the Curator for Western Americana of The

Bancroft Library in processing the collections as needed. The Project Archivist will also work

with the Digital Collections Unit to complete Encoded Archival Description (EAD) markup of the

finding aid for delivery to the Online Archive of California.

UC Berkeley librarians are expected to participate in librarywide planning and governance, and

work effectively in a shared decisionmaking environment. Advancement is based in part upon

professional contributions beyond the primary assignment; the successful candidate will show

evidence or promise of such contributions to the Library, campus, UC System, and profession.

Qualifications

Minimum Basic Qualification(s) at time of application:

MLS from an ALAaccredited institution or equivalent degree, with a specialization in archival

studies

Additional Required Qualifications by start date in position:

Demonstrated understanding of archival collections and principles of arrangement and

description of manuscript materials with a completed finding aid.

Experience working with organizational records.

Experience working with archival information systems, such as ArchivesSpace.

Demonstrated written and oral communication skills.

Demonstrated proficiency at meeting goals and deadlines.

Familiarity with Encoded Archival Description (EAD).

Familiarity with MARC data elements.

Additional Preferred Qualifications:

Previous archival project experience.

Undergraduate degree in history (especially US or Environmental history).

Knowledge of Environmental history and politics.
