General Description of Duties Assigned to the Northeast Branch, the primary purpose of this position is to shelve library materials being returned by patrons.(Checking in and routing are secondary to the shelving responsibilities).ESSENTIAL DUTIESShelves library materials.Retrieves discharged library materials from designated areas.Sorts and shelves library materials in order by call number.Straightens and shifts library materials as needed.Removes damaged library materials from shelves.Records shelving statistics and report monthly.Assists library patrons.Refers patrons to reference desk for assistance.Answers simple informational and directional questions pertaining to library materials and services.Performs additional assignments as necessary.Performs additional tasks as needed, such as handling \snags\ in the media department, taking mail to the mail room, bringing newly processed books down from Technical Services, transporting book drop materials to circulation.OTHER IMPORTANT OR MARGINAL DUTIESNone.DIFFICULTYThis work consists of clerical assignments performed in accordance with well established procedures.RESPONSIBILITY:Supervision ReceivedThe employee receives usually detailed or specific instructions.Some assignments may involve general instructions.Supervision of OthersNone.INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL CUSTOMER CONTACTContacts are with the supervisor, coworkers, other departmental employees, and the general public.EQUIPMENT AND TOOLS USEDOffice equipment such as a personal computer and copier; rolling library carts of various dimensions.WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDSThe employee works in a standard library environment, primarily in a standing position.No unusual physical effort is required and the work is not hazardous in nature.Must be able to lift and move library books and materials in excess of 50 pounds.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIESKnowledge of the alphabet.Knowledge of the Dewey Decimal System.Knowledge of LeRoy Collins Leon County Library policies and procedures.Knowledge of book-mending procedures.Skill in handling tasks with attention to details.Ability to manage workload and shelve accurately without constant supervision.Ability to follow written and oral instructions.Ability to deal courteously with public and staff.Ability to stand for long periods of time.Ability to deal courteously with the public and staff.Ability to work days, evenings, and weekends.Ability to file in alpha numeric sequence.Ability to lift or carry up to 40 pounds.Ability to push or pull up to 50 pounds.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSRequires the ability to follow oral and written instructions.Necessary Special Requirements:Must be able to work days, evenings, and weekends.Must successfully complete written and practical test on alphabetizing and the Dewey Decimal System.FLSA STATUS: Position is Non-exempt.Analysis: This is manual work shelving books.Leon County pays employees a living wage of $12.00 per hour as a minimum hourly rate.
