DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES / ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The Houston Public Library seeks an innovative, customer-service driven, creative, and energetic Librarian III who has strong leadership skills, an ability to inspire staff, and a passion for serving as a hands-on and highly engaged manager for the recently renovated Jungman Neighborhood Library. Since re-opening in October 2016, the Jungman Neighborhood Library has become one of the highest circulating HPL locations with an active programming schedule for all ages. Serving a diverse community, programs include computer classes in English and Spanish, open job labs, English Conversation Circles, Spanish Language Classes, and language learning sessions. For youth, programs include After School Zone with a meal program, Baby story time, Toddler Time, Pajama story time, gaming, crafts, and Sign Time. Successful candidates will communicate effectively, provide exceptional customer service, enjoy working with, learning and teaching new and emerging technologies, be at ease multitasking in a fast-paced public service setting and enjoy interacting with people of all ages from diverse backgrounds.

The Librarian III will:

Possess exceptional leadership skills to oversee and coordinate team members to effectively complete tasks;

Take initiative to creatively solve problems and possess sound decision-making skills;

Exhibit a high level of creativity for innovative services, programming, and outreach;

Maintain collaborative relationships with local community groups, including YMCA International, Houston Language Partners, Workforce Solutions, and Literacy Advance of Houston;

Have a strong working knowledge of Microsoft software and knowledge of Internet software and media applications, digital technologies, android and other software, electronic devices such as e-readers and tablets, video gaming equipment, and other technologies;

Interact with customers at the Customer Service Desk and roving assisting with information requests, technology assistance, and programming.

Perform collection development and maintenance; and

Work one evening a week and every other weekend (Saturday and/or Sunday).

Houston Public Library serves a population of 2.2 million citizens through a network of 37 Neighborhood Libraries spread out across the Houston area, a Central Library, and three Special Collections Libraries.

WORKING CONDITIONS

The position occasionally requires stooping or bending. Occasional very light lifting, such as three or four reams of papers or books (up to 20 pounds or an equivalent weight) may be required. Must be able to move freely throughout the library to file/retrieve library materials.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT

Requires Master of Library Science degree from a school accredited by the American Library Association.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT

Three (3) years of library experience are required, including one (1) year of management experience.

LICENSE REQUIREMENT

Valid Driver's License and compliance with the City of Houston policy on driving (AP 2-2).

PREFERENCES

Preference will be given to those who have:

Experience in personnel management and supervision.

Ability to plan and organize work and skilled at prioritization.

Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate with others;

Experience working with people of diverse backgrounds;

Experience providing training to colleagues preferred.

Knowledge of current versions of MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook), Sirsi Symphony;

Ability to communicated effectively orally and in writing;

Bilingual skills (Spanish/English).

Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.
