SUMMARY: The Librarian is responsible to support Cumberland County College's mission statement and strategic directions and is accountable and responsible to assist the Head Librarian oversee Library operations, services, and resources to provide service and assistance to students/learners/faculty.

Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following (other duties may be assigned):

Provides information literacy instruction and library use to support instructional programs

Acts as Library supervisor in the absence of the Head Librarian.

Provides professional library services in all areas of the Library.

Provides individual and group guidance and instruction to students in methods of research, including use of the online catalog, databases and print resources.

Oversees and supervises student personnel including orienting, training, and assigning work.

Performs assessment to support the College and Library Strategic Outcomes.

Performs circulation duties such as checking materials in and out, shelving material, reading shelves, sending overdue notices, and maintaining records as required.

Assist with collection development, serve as Cataloging Librarian and provide acquisition, reference and circulation services.

Perform other related duties as assigned by supervisor.

Typical Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Must be PC literate and experienced with Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Access or equivalent software programs with working knowledge of automated Library resources and systems, on-line database usage, internet, RDA, MARC21, and LCSH.


Masters Degree in Library/Information Science (MSLS/MLIS) from an ALA accredited institution or equivalent. Minimum of three (3) years progressive responsibility in an academic library (preferred). Administrative and some Community College experience desired. Ability to work in a pleasant and effective manner with students, faculty, co-workers, and on and off campus communities and agencies.

Supplemental Information


Ability to read and interpret documents such as operating and maintenance instructions for library equipment, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports, instructional material and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of students, patrons or employees.


Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.


Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.


Familiarity with library terminology; ability to use or learn interlibrary loan (ILL) services; engage in public speaking; and ability to communicate effectively with the public and community.
