Essential Functions:

The Washington University Libraries is seeking a dynamic, creative, engaging, and experienced professional to serve as Associate University Librarian (AUL) for Research and Academic Collaboration Services Division.  The Washington University Libraries, comprised of 12 libraries on the university’s Danforth, West, and Medical School Campuses, operate as a unified library system in support of the research, teaching, and learning mission of the university.  The Libraries’ house more than 3.6 million books, journals, and other print materials; 2.5 million microforms; 50,000 AV titles; and have access to more than 65,000 electronic journals and more than 500,000 e-books.  The libraries’ 135 dedicated professional and support staff serve an increasingly diverse community and exemplify the libraries’ guiding principles of Synergy, Sustainability and Durability, Sensibility, Accountability, Alignment, and Dynamic to meet the needs of faculty, staff, and beyond now and in the years to come.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Vice Provost and University Librarian, the AUL, Research and Academic Collaboration provides leadership and management for the division, including: library planning and programming serving scholar-oriented services in support of research, instruction, and learning. The AUL leads and facilitates the design and implementation of collaborative partnerships and innovations by monitoring and applying developments in research libraries, relevant information behaviors, and services innovation in concert with the evolving needs of faculty and students. The AUL has direct management responsibility, including recruitment, development, and evaluation of a diverse professional staff. As a member of the University Librarian’s Council (ULC), the AUL contributes to organizational effectiveness and efficiency by creating and providing strategic direction and policy development within a collaborative, team oriented environment and participates in strategic planning, budgeting, operations, and personnel decisions for the university libraries.  Along with the members of ULC, represents the Vice Provost and University Librarian and the library within the university and at local, regional, and national meetings.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful incumbent will develop and communicate a vision and incorporate innovative approaches to leading complex, integrated programs and projects, have effective problem analysis and resolution skills, and the ability to plan and implement new services designed to meet user needs. Areas of responsibility include: Research and Liaison Services; Distributed/Departmental Libraries; Academic Support and Collaboration: information literacy, instruction coordination, student engagement.

As a member of the Libraries’ senior leadership team, contributes to the development of vision and strategy.  Directs staff to develop and implement innovative, comprehensive programs and services based on the vision. Leads development and implementation of comprehensive sustainable programs and services across all areas of responsibility.

Contributes to substantive expertise, insight and creative thinking in order to play a significant lead role in library-wide planning, setting strategic initiatives, resource allocation, policy development and evaluation of activities and services.

Facilitates strategic development, ongoing assessment, and planning of interdependent programs including Research and Liaison Services; Distributed/Departmental Libraries; Academic Support and Collaboration.

Works collaboratively with organizational and institutional stakeholders to address scholarly, research, teaching and learning needs in a timely manner.

Actively seeks out opportunities to work with University and external organizations to develop coalitions and partnerships that ensure enduring access to content and collection resources, wherever held. 

Contributes to the profession through engagement with appropriate internal and external organizations.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

Advanced degree in librarianship or information science from ALA-accredited program, or equivalent degree.

Minimum of 5 years of experience managing a department or significant program in an academic library or related academic setting.

Depth of knowledge of trends and issues affecting university research libraries, along with a strong understanding of the role the library plays in the research, teaching, and learning mission of the university.

Progressively responsible management and supervisory experience in an academic library or in higher education.

Demonstrated knowledge of technology development and evolving trends in user behavior in an academic environment.

Demonstrated ability to engage others in collaborative planning and delivery of user-centered services.

Excellent leadership, communication, interpersonal and collaborative skills.

Successful track records in program development.

Experience with the application of technology in knowledge management in support of teaching and scholarship.

Commitment to fostering an inclusive, diverse work environment.

Demonstrated ability to build and maintain deep collaborative relationships in the delivery of effective services to users.

Demonstrated judgment, broad perspective and emotional intelligence in working with organizational and institutional constituents.

Understanding of teaching and learning practices and innovations in higher education.

Preferred Qualifications:

Knowledge of library organization, planning, and management.

Significant management experience leading integrated/complex department or program working with libraries in public facing services, such as research services, subject or liaison services or similar service offerings.

Experience working with consortia and shared service organization; significant supervisory/management of professional staff.

Ability or experience leading organization and/or institutional initiatives and collaborations.

Job Type/Schedule:

This position is full-time and works approximately 37.5 hours per week.
