Profile

Under the general direction of the Library Dean and day-to-day work direction of the Archives Specialist, the incumbent will process the print and born-digital archives of former Congressman Sam Farr and his father, former California State Senator Fred Farr.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:
Arrange, describe, and preserve approximately 200 linear feet of materials documenting the careers of both former California Senator Fred Farr and former Congressman Sam Farr, including born-digital materials and audio-visual materials.
Create descriptive finding aids compliant with archival description and communications standards such as Describing Archives: A Content Standard (DACS) and Encoded Archival Description (EAD).
Communicate with Congressman Farr and related individuals about the project’s progress.
Survey collections and develop processing plans.
Collaborate with the Digital Resources Support Specialist to identify materials for digitization and addition to the library’s digital collections.
Oversee the work of students assistants and library volunteers.
Other Functions:
Perform other job-related duties and special projects as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
General knowledge of library collection organization and classification scheme and ability to interpret bibliographic records. Working knowledge of institution’s and library’s policies and practices associated with the ethical use of and access to library and on-line resources. Basic knowledge of national standards and guidelines pertaining to libraries, including working knowledge of institution’s standards pertaining to copyright and intellectual property protection and the ability to source and apply such policies and standards to avoid potential violations.
Skills:
Full proficiency in all technical aspects of work assignments including a thorough knowledge of functional area policies and procedures and applicable work methods. Full proficiency in the use of automated library system(s) and subsystem(s). Demonstrated problem solving and research skills to address standard and non-standard work problems. Effective communication and interpretive skills to be able to assist in resolving patron problems and complaints, assess patron information needs, and orient and guide patrons in use of library resources.
Ability to:
interpret library unit’s policies and procedures and apply them accurately in performing work functions, as well as the ability to evaluate procedures and recommend changes; fully utilize standard and non-standard features of various on-line resources and standard desktop software packages, such as word processing and spreadsheets, to perform technical work or assist patrons. Demonstrated ability to compile and present information in an organized manner.
Minimum Qualifications
Completion of a high school diploma or equivalent certification and two to three years of related library and/or clerical experience or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
Specialized Skills
Experience processing archival collections
Knowledge of Library of Congress Subject Headings
Strong writing and oral communications skills
Strong attention to detail
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
Ability to lift boxes weighing 40 lbs
Technical fluency Microsoft Office Professional Suite, and Google mail and calendaring programs.
Preferred Qualifications
Equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree and experience working in an academic library
Knowledge of nationally-accepted archival standards, archival arrangement and description, and preservation practices
Familiarity with archival metadata standards, including DACS and EAD
Familiarity with electronic records management issues
Experience processing collections of congressional papers
Educational background in public policy, political science, or related field
Experience working with archival information systems, such as ArchivesSpace
Interest in California political history

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
All offers of employment are contingent upon the successful completion of a background check (including a criminal records check).
The person holding this position is considered a “mandated reporter” under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
This position will have a duty to report to the Campus Title IX Officer information pertaining to victims of sex discrimination, sexual harassment, sexual misconduct, dating/domestic violence, and stalking as required by CSU Executive Order 1095.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Office environment with standard equipment and tasks. Position requires working at a computer and desk for extended periods of time. May require travel between campus offices and off-campus locations.
Compensation and Benefits
