The Idaho State Historical Society is an extraordinary system of cultural and historic resources comprised of the Idaho State Museum, Idaho State Archives, State Historic Preservation Office, and Old Idaho Penitentiary and Historic Sites Program. The Idaho State Archives Photography Collection is a dynamic representation of Idaho history which consists of over 500,000 photographs in a variety of formats that mirror the history of photography. The Photo Archivist will appraise, process, and preserve photography collections and images, and will oversee reference inquiries related to the Idaho State Archives (ISA) photograph collections and images.

Responsibilities:

Implements collection development policies, practices, and strategies to ensure that negatives, prints, slides, born-digital images and other historical photographic material are collected, preserved, and made available to the public.

Maintains a working knowledge of intellectual property and copyright issues for photographic materials including public domain.

Surveys and appraises donated materials to determine condition and historical value.

Applies archival management theories and methods to process and catalog collections, including the physical preparation of materials for long-term preservation by arranging, describing and housing them according to archival best practices and standards.

Oversees digitization projects of photograph collections in accordance with archival best practices and standards for agency, regional and national online public access repositories.

Creates access to photograph collections by maintaining the photograph repository in ArchivesSpace and providing patron access for the photograph collections on the Idaho State Historical Society (ISHS) web site.

Applies archival best practices and standards to create finding aides in accordance with national and agency standards.

Determines priority of photograph collections or images for processing based on knowledge of research needs, agency priorities, historical significance, and professional standards.

Responds to a wide variety of reference inquiries from a diverse research community.

Seeks grant funds for preservation, reproduction and digitization of photographic collections.

Provides support to agency public programs and fundraising events as assigned

May supervise volunteers and interns

Minimum Qualifications:

Good knowledge of archival reference and research methods.

Experience conducting historical research using primary source materials.

Good knowledge of principles and methods for appraisal, arrangement, and description of archival documents or manuscripts or photographic materials.

Experience preparing finding aids and descriptive guides for historical documents and/or collections.

Good knowledge of archival organization, services, practices, and terminology.

Experience with automated records systems.

Experience evaluating, organizing, and classifying historical documents and/or collections.

Desirable Qualifications:

Experience interpreting and applying public records law as it pertains to confidential records.

Experience applying digitization standards and practice.

Some knowledge of supervisory practices.

Some knowledge of intellectual property and/or copyright law.
