Position Description

The Evening Librarian performs professional duties to facilitate the operations of the Library including diagnosing and interpreting the needs of students, faculty, staff and community patrons, providing relevant information from the JCC library collection, print and non-print, and other community colleges.   

Knowledge & Responsibilities:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Provides research and reference services to patrons, particularly in the evening hours.

Demonstrates a thorough and accurate knowledge of the field of library and information science.

Connects library and information science with related fields and the college curriculum.

Plans, develops, and teaches library and information literacy instruction.

Provides effective circulation services and training in circulation services and procedures, including reserves and media scheduling.

Catalogs library materials in all formats using the most authoritative and technologically sound methods and practices.

Collaborates with departmental faculty to assess effectiveness and strength of collection in assigned subject disciplines.

Assists with selecting, receiving, organizing, and cataloging books, multimedia, and other materials and equipment.

Performs inventories of all library collections.

Assists with collection development, collection assessment, archiving and purging activities.

Answers all reference questions and recommends appropriate books and multimedia to students, faculty, staff and patrons.

Assists students, faculty, staff and patrons with use of public access catalog, Internet and other electronic information retrieval systems.

Manages, troubleshoots and resolves library hardware and software issues.

Collaborates with departmental faculty to assess effectiveness and strength of collection in assigned subject disciplines.

Investigates technologies that will improve services and employs available instructional technology, when appropriate.

Creates photo ID's.

Supports the total mission of the college through attendance of various college functions.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Language Skills 

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. 

Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. 

Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Mathematical Skills 

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. 

Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. 

Reasoning Ability 

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. 

Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Computer Skills 

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have experience with library management systems and should be proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
