Position Summary:The Consortium Library at the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) is recruiting for an Instructional Design Librarian with a strong commitment to student success, information literacy instruction, innovative user-education services, and meaningful assessment. Under the general direction of the Head of the Instruction and Research Services Department, the successful candidate will be responsible for leading the collaborative development, promotion, delivery, and evaluation of flexible, diverse, and user-centered learning experiences.
The successful Instructional Design Librarian will be highly productive, innovative, and technologically adept, as well as committed to the goals for the Library’s instruction program, including supporting student success, embedding information literacy into curriculum, developing online learning experiences and/or courses, and integrating new technologies and e-pedagogy. The Library seeks to develop more effective and sustainable instruction practices to enhance student success.
The nine faculty librarians in the Library’s Instruction and Research Department teach library research classes and workshops for their respective liaison programs and provide instruction for General Education Requirement (GER) Tier 1 courses (e.g., writing, communication, first-year experience, college success skills). This position will teach library research workshops to inform practice, and will teach as part of the instructor rotation for LS 101, a one-credit introduction to academic library research course. Additionally, the successful candidate will participate in staffing the Library’s Research Help Desk. Hours for instruction and reference can include days, nights, and weekends.
This position plays an important role in the ongoing development of the Information Literacy program and is essential to the teaching mission of the Consortium Library as Library Faculty increasingly deliver learning experiences online and work with OER resources. The successful candidate will provide support and training for faculty, and be able to develop curriculum and incorporate instructional technologies into the teaching and learning process in a library setting.
The Instructional Design Librarian will employ expertise in learning theory, pedagogical methods, and learning-outcomes assessment. As an active participant in the Library’s instruction program, the successful candidate will collaborate with library faculty to design curriculum, tools, and learning experiences that enhance critical thinking and information literacy. The person in this position will also develop workshops for library and departmental faculty to support Library Faculty capacity for online teaching.
As a member of the faculty, the Instructional Design Librarian will participate in professional organizations, faculty meetings and governance, and professional-development opportunities. The successful candidate will have excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills, a strong commitment to excellent customer service, and be expected to meet all of the library faculty requirements for tenure and promotion.
Required Education
•Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent
•Master’s Degree in Online Innovation and Design
•Online Teaching Certification
Required Experience
Four years of experience working as an Instructional Design Librarian in an academic library
Experience with online teaching, applying instructional design principles and techniques, and learning theory
Recent experience teaching information literacy concepts in an academic library
Experience with Camtasia, Captivate, Voice Thread, Google Suite, Digication/E-Portfolio, Video Captioning, and Media/Video Creation including editing images
Experience with leading library teams for course and tutorials development
Experience providing research support to faculty with Open Education Resources in an academic library setting
Experience with Guide on the Side and the Springshare Suite, including creating or converting Libguides to meet accessibility requirements.
Recent experience providing research/reference assistance in an academic library
Preferred Experience
Knowledge of current and emerging trends in information literacy instruction in higher education
Experience with SirsiDynix
