JOB SUMMARY

Supervise and manage the school library media center and ensure its program aligns to the mission, goals, and objectives of the school and school district.

\r

JOB SCOPE

\r
Ensure that students and staff are effective users of ideas and information. Empower students to be critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers, skillful researchers, ethical users of information. Instill a love of learning in all students and ensure equitable access to information. Collaborate with classroom teachers to design and implement units of instruction, assess student learning. Serve as teacher, print and non- print materials expert and curriculum consultant to involve the library media center in the school’s instructional program. Macro areas of professional skill and expertise include School Library Media Center Program Administration and Assessment, Collaboration for Instruction and Services, Library Media Center Inquiry-based Environment, Professional Growth and Responsibilities.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

\r
Program Administration: Create and/or maintain goals, objectives, policies and procedures that reflect the mission, goals, and objectives of the school and district

\r
Oversee all aspects of the daily operation of the school library and maintain statistical data and appropriate records of operation

\r
Implement a public relations/advocacy program that promotes literacy and the use of the library information center’s services and resources using a wide variety of formats (using a wide variety of formats including website, social networking, newsletters, presentations)

\r
Collect and analyze statistical data to improve instruction; demonstrate correlations between the School Library Program and student achievement

\r
Report results of assessments to school community and administration and use results to ensure growth and improvement in the library program

\r
Plan and implement a budget to meet long and short range plans for the program

\r
Implement a continuous library resource collection development and evaluation process

\r
Ensure materials are current, accurate, diverse, developmentally appropriate and aligned with curriculum content standards and the school’s instructional program

\r
Supervise staff assigned to school library, including student assistants and parent/community volunteers

\r
Inventory, organize, schedule, and circulate resources and equipment

\r
Comply with Federal and state laws, State Board of Education rule, Board policy, Administrative regulation and District procedures in the library/media services area

\r

\r
Collaboration for Instruction and Services:\r
Collaborate with classroom teachers to design, deliver, and assess learning experiences that incorporate direct instruction, inquiry learning, information literacies in their formats, critical thinking, and self-assessment determined by curriculum standards and the needs of learners as indicated by data

\r
Provide and promote ongoing professional learning opportunities for staff, particularly in the areas of integration of information technology and information literacy skills

\r
Promote a love of reading and lifelong learning

\r
Promote digital learning that supports the TEKS and research-based effective instructional strategies to improve learning

\r
Serve on decision making committees in the school (curriculum, technology, strategic planning)

\r
Demonstrate an understanding and commitment to a standards-based approach to instructional design and delivery that aligns to the district’s published curriculum both contextually and cognitivelyI

Create a positive, inviting, creative, and attractive physical environment – with areas for individual and group use – to meet the diverse needs of learners and become essential part of the learning community

Develop and maintain resources appropriate to the curriculum, the learners, and instructional strategies of the school community

Cooperate and network with other libraries/agencies

Establish procedures for selection, acquisition, circulation, resource sharing of resources in all formats

Evaluate, promote and use existing and emerging technologies to support teaching and learning

Promote and provide instruction to students and staff on digital citizenship and the ethical use of information: copyright, fair use, and licensing of intellectual property

Support academic rigor by integrating the teaching of research and information processing skills K- 12 to ensure students are college ready, workforce ready, and effective life-long users of information

Promote maximum learning and use of resources through scheduled instruction and open access

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

Maintains emotional control under stress. Climbing, stretching and frequent lifting of books and boxes is required.

MINIMUM EDUCATION. EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATION

\r
Bachelor's degree from accredited college or university is required

\r
Masters in library science and experience in a library media center and/or classroom setting is preferred

\r
Requires valid teaching certificate and one of the following: Provisional or Professional Librarian Certificate, Learning Resources Specialist Certificate, Learning Resources Endorsement, or School Librarian (EC-12). Will consider university deficiency plan in library sciences with emergency permit option.
