The Minot Public Library (MPL) is looking for a dynamic person to fill the position of Adult Services Librarian. There is never a dull moment at the Minot Public Library… MPL was the first public library in North Dakota to open a Makerspace and recently became the first library in the state to open a Tool Library. In 2017, the Minot Public Library was named a “Star Library” by the North Dakota State Library. In 2018, MPL introduced 3D printing to our patrons and are also taking part in the ALA’s “Libraries Transform” campaign – we are proud of our mission to connect, enrich and inspire the people of our community.
The Adult Services Librarian is essential to the Library’s mission. This person not only oversees the day-to-day duties of the Adult Services area serving as a circulation supervisor, but is encouraged to explore and offer a variety of programs for all adults (from new adults to senior citizens) as well as take on collection development duties, act as research librarian, provide, reader’s advisory, promote services and much more!

Adult Services Librarian
Closing Date: Open until May 15, 2018, or until filled.
Starting Salary: $44,982/year

Education and Experience:
A Master’s Degree in Library Science from a college or university accredited by the American Library Association is required, plus one to two years of progressively responsible work experience in a public library setting. One to two years of experience supervising and managing staff.
This is a supervisory position in the Adult Services Department of the Minot Public Library. Work is performed under the supervision of the Library Director. The work includes, but is not limited to, supervising approximately ten staff members including:
Library Information Specialist
The successful applicant will participate as a team member among other Library staff and support the Library Board policies as well as the long range goals of the Library. The Adult Services Librarian must contribute to a cooperative and welcoming work environment. The Adult Services Librarian must serve the Library’s internal and external customers in a pleasant, empathetic manner. A successful Adult Services Librarian will exercise a high degree of initiative, sound judgement and discretion in the performance of the above stated duties as well as the responsibilities outlined below.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of principles, methods and practices of professional library work (including Collection Management and Reader’s Advisory)
Knowledge of effective supervision methods and practices including performance evaluation, hiring, job assignments, and scheduling
Knowledge of library information systems, working knowledge of computers, Microsoft Word, Excel, Publisher and PowerPoint, social networking sites (Facebook, Twitter etc.) and basic website management
Possesses strong customer service skills, the ability to resolve customer concerns and manage disturbances and emergencies in the Library
Ability to conduct reference interviews, analyze requests and perform complex computer searches of databases and internet resources
Ability to communicate (hear and speak clearly) with staff, customers and others
Ability to be a team player and be open to staff comments, suggestions, complaints or consultations
Ability to motivate and lead Library staff
Flexibility in dealing with staff and patrons as well as in implementing innovative library services
Possesses a valid State Driver’s License, an insurable driving record, required
